dear franklin,

i'm not a doctor, but i am a diagnostic medical sonographer. and (for

extra credit) my cousin is a nurse-practitioner for a neurologist. i'm

writing from knowledge i've learned in school and in working with patients

for two years.

with the exception of #1, your symptoms sound more neurologic than

endocrinological. i am 50 now and i notice bright lights and noises bother

me far more than they used to. the car wash where the car stays stationary

and the jets move back and forth now gives me dizziness and vertigo, for

example. TV graphics often bother me such as those you described in

#4---VERY often.

some of this increased neurologic sensitivity can be attributed to

aging. we have a " labyrinth " in our inner ear, for example (it's really

called the labyrinth) which is lined with tiny hairlike projections. these

can stiffen over time, and the fluid in the labyrinth can become unevenly

distributed, causing vertigo or dizziness. " Otoliths, " little pieces of

hardened calcium, can float around in the labyrinth and cause loss of

balance. as well, stiffening of the 3 ear bones- - - vicki, what are the

names?---stapes, malleolus....it's stirrup, anvil, and hammer in

English----can cause odd auditory sensations.

#3 above sounds like " benign positional vertigo " ---here's an article on that:

http://www.emedicine.com/emerg/topic57.htm

#3 could also be something as simple as low blood pressure ---when you do,

quick positional changes can result in the symptoms you describe. this is

called postural hypotension, and here's an article on THAT:

http://www.drdaveanddee.com/hypotension.html

i hope all this helps. i guess the theme of what i'm writing, though it

didn't answer your " is this caused by diabetes? " question, is Old Age Isn't

For Sissies. :-) however, it beats the alternative, doesn't it?

all the best

lin also noted dizziness on rising from the dental chair.

Just thought I would mention that I discovered in my 50's that I was reacting -

(allergic???) to the dental freezing that contains adrenalin. I nearly passed

out before the dentist could start working on me. Evidently this is not an

unknown thing; and since then I simply tell any dentist I go to about this and

they use an alternate freezing.

As most of you know, we are battling my hubbies prostate cancer (advanced) also

and I am on several of those lists. As with us with DM any symptom is

immediately thought to be caused by the disease uppermost in our minds; we need

to remember that having Diabetes does NOT mean that we cannot have any of the

other common ailments known to the human race and should rule those out before

jumping to conclusions.
