Cholesterol-lowering statin drugs are so ubiquitous, top doctors now only

half-jokingly suggest putting them in the drinking water. Most cardiologists

view statins as one of the most significant new weapons against heart

disease in decades.

But there is a quiet backlash brewing against statins, sold under the brand

names Zocor, Lipitor and Pravachol.

Critics believe drug companies have vastly understated side effects caused

by statins ‹ particularly muscle pains and memory problems. Drug companies

maintain that side effects are rare, and that benefits of statins far

outweigh any risk.

For statin users and critics, 2004 could be a breakthrough year. This spring

marks the end of a five-year study comparing side effects among more than

1,000 users of Zocor, Pravachol or a placebo, and the results should be

announced later this year. If the research shows a higher rate of cognitive

side effects than previously reported, doctors may finally start paying

closer attention to the aches and pains of patients who use the drugs. ...
