Guest guest
Are there income limitations to having Medicaid? I thought I'd go to the web sites for both our insurance and for my Medicare. Hopefully I'll have a better idea of what's actually covered. The only saving grace about this wheelchair situation is that my therapist is adamant that I need one-and it has to be electric. Sometimes I start feeling like I might as well just forget the whole thing....*but* then I think of all the things I miss out on because I can't walk that far. So I'd be sitting home instead. That gets me to thinking how badly I need one. I feel so sorry for my husband. He either goes alone, or stays home with me. What a choice that is for him. For this reason alone, I'd fight to get what I know I need. I've been like this for most our married life. (30+ years) and he has given up doing so much in all that time. I've been patting myself on the back for finally using an electric cart in grocery store! (I was worried I'd having problems learning how to work it--or worse yet bump into someone or something. <lol> It sure made a world of difference in how I felt! I was even able to get all the things we needed and didn't need to check out with only a couple of items and drag myself out of there with tears in my eyes. I'm soooo proud I did that! My choice was facing a rather bare cupboard, or facing my worries...My stomach won out. <g> AND Rod didn't stop off on his way home from work either. Now I really know how badly I need and want a wheelchair. Thanks for the info on Medicare you sent along. Helps to know what I'm up against. Love, CindyH ~~ From: None ( You state you have Medicare. Along with Medicare comes Medicaid. You get Medicaid automatically without having to pay for it. I believe it is Medicaid that covers the durable medical equipment like power chairs. Of course I just read a news article yesterday saying how Medicaid/Medicare is going through a major overhaul on it's decisions to cover power chairs. Guest guest
Dear Cindy, Apparently, after doing more reading, each State is different when it comes to who and under what circumstances can have Medicaid. So you will have to see what is required for your particular State. Also, after doing more reading, I think that it is really Medicare Part A coverage (which is free and automatic when you get approved for disability) - see this page - http://www.ssa.gov/pubs/10043.html#part2 It states - " A 20 percent copayment applies to covered durable medical equipment (e.g., wheelchairs and hospital beds). " Last year I read something that talked about Medicaid covering chairs which I was interested in since the new insurance my husband got through his job only covers $700 in a year for durable medical equipment - which would not cover even the smallest power chair. I went online and read up on it. Unfortunately the page I bookmarked is currently not working. So basically I am confused right now as to whether it is Medicaid or Medicare Part A and the web pages that could tell me aren't working. I will continue to look into it and let you know when I find something out. Hugs, B. HEDS, New Jersey, USA
