Guest guest
I am having problems with my doctor now. I have type 2, which is not controlled by meds. I was on insulin until Nov, and my doc took me off and put me on glucophage, Im now on 2000mg glucophage and 30mg actos, plus I use a sliding scale of regular insulin and take NPH insulin at night. I switched doctors because she was only in from 1-5 on Thursdays. I got an appointment with another doc on March 17. On Friday, I went to ER because of a kidney stone. The doc on call called a urologist and he told me to call his office on Monday to set up an appointment. I called the office and can't get in until next Tuesday, the 14th. I called my doctor because I have to have a referral to see the urologist and my doc won't give me a referral until he sees me on the 17th, which means I have to cancel my appointment with the urologist. Last night, I started having problems again, from another kidney stone. I called my doc to try to get an appointment and they can't see me until next week. So that means that I can't see the urologist for a few more weeks. The doc told me that if I was in that much pain, to go to the ER, but that does no good, because they can't do anything for me except give me pain meds that I already have. It is so frustrating, when you need a doc when you are sick, you can't get in with one. Thanks for letting me vent. Mindy

Guest guest
I deal with doctors day in and day out for 4 of us. My approach is to be knowledgeable and not back down when they try to pat me on the head and say " now, now things will be ok " I take notes with my questions written on them. I ask for documentation from all test results so that I can research it further on the web. I call they offices frequently with questions, concerns or to give an update on how a new med may be working. I also try to always say something positive about the how professional the staff treats me . I let them know i truly appreciate them taking the the time to respond to my calls. On the rare occasion that i really feel the doctor is just not worthy of my trust I change doctors but before i do I make sure I let his office know why, stating facts and not getting all emotional. Just recently I had a doctor tell me that he was afraid of my foster son (my foster son is mentally retarded and is in a wheelchair) so obviously this is not the doctor I want for him. I changed doctors. When I called the former doctor's office i asked them to let the doctor know i appreciated his honesty but under the circumstances i felt this would hinder my foster son from receiving quality care. Guest guest
Eunice, If a dr does fire us for not being compliant to their wishes b/c we are trying to take care of our body and know that the way that dr may handle a situation may not be the best for us is actually a blessing in disguise. I had a dr fire me from his practice b/c we couldn't communicate but it was a blessing for me b/c I have a better gyn. And this dr that fired me tried to tell me to jump up and down and scream at the insurance company to get them to cover the medication I was on at the time for my endometriosis. Tried to tell me that the insurance companies listen better to the patient than the dr and that was not true and I knew it. In the time just before I left (thanks to his firing me) that dr I reported that office to the insurance company I had about how disorganized the office was. Funny thing was, that in spite of that being the case the staff was nicer to me than the dr himself was. The dr I have now treating my endometriosis is a highly organized person and appreciate that her office is so highly organized. B/c of my training as a Medical Secretary, I can always tell when an office is highly disorganized. But I agree that screaming and yelling doesn't work at all to get what you want but it's hard not to do sometimes when they are already upsetting you. Also, every time a patient refuses to be treated a certain way they often have a reason for being non-compliant and that dr should state that reason in the chart. I learned about this from when I had been working at one of the hospitals here back in 2002 before my endometriosis kept me from staying at that job. Mindy, I would definitely call the office back and tell them that you can't wait til next week to be seen by your PCP to get a referral to Urology, and that you can't wait that long to see a Urologist. Pls feel free to e-mail me privately any time. Guest guest
When I was at the emergency room on Friday, the doc on call called a urologist and he said for me to call this week to make an appointment. When I called the office, the receptionist told me, very rudely I might add, that he doesn't really have time to see new patients, so she didn't know what she could do. I told her that maybe she should discuss that with her boss the doctor and tell him that he needs to stop telling patients in the ER to come see him. She said, well he just doesn't know how busy he really is. I tried to get in with another urologist, I called 4 offices within 75 miles of me and none of them could see me within the next week, so I am stuck at that office. Guest guest
Amen Eunice. There is no reason you can't communicate with your doctor or their staff in a sane ans civil manner. IF that doesn't work, find another doctor. In the long run, you will be much happier. You can be assertive without being rude. In the long run you will have a better WORKING relationship with them. Whether you like it or not, they really work for the insurance company, since they are the party which pays (at least pays the largest share)... I mean, don't you get paid by the people you work for? As nice as this concept seems, if you work for Perkins waiting tables, you would probably have a real issue with the first jerk who walked in and sat in your section and acted like a jerk, screaming and yelling and demanding things (and think of all the stories about people who then do nasty things to the food these types of customers order). It really pays to treat them with the respect you want to be treated with. Mike > > > In a message dated 3/8/2006 12:57:29 P.M. Guest guest
Does your insurance company have a process to work with specialists outside of a referal?
