Guest guest
Okay this is going to sound weird but how do you know if you subluxed, dislocated or just injured your wrist? I dont even remember what i was doing last night but all of a sudden my wrist started to really really hurt. It was to the point that i felt nauseaus and had tears in my eyes. I moved it around to the best of my ability and felt something 'move' and it felt like something had shifted back. I put on my wrist brace and took a percocet and went to bed. Today it is really sore. I can only type for short periods of time (Which isnt good as i have a 8 - 10 page paper worth 15% of my mark due in 15 hours!). Because of this paper i cant really take any pain killers as I have to think straight. The pain is mostly in the region by my thumb which is weird because lately it has been the side of my pinky finger that has been sore. Well after this long winded post I guess my question is how to tell the difference and should I go get it looked at and by whom. Thank you all in advance Stacey

The technical distinction is that a sublux is one where the two bones in the joint shift from their normal positions but are still making bone to bone contact. A dislocation is where they shift so far that they lose bone to bone contact. As for it feeling wierd being on the thumb side instead of the pinky finger side, it is definitely possible that the pinky side may have been acting up and the thumb side was compensating and then just let go itself. It sounds like, whichever it was, that you may have shifted it back into position. Aside from the pain issue, do you have " normal " range of motion or movement back? Does it feel like there is any grinding or grating taking place in the joint when you move bend your wrist in any directions? If it was " out " and you got it back in by moving it yourself, you would still expect it to hurt afterwards because the sublux or dislocation would have put stress on the tendons and ligaments in the wrist. From your description (particularly not having any idea of what you might have done to cause it) it sounds most like a somewhat spontaneous sublux. Had you fallen on it or violently twisted it in some fashion I would suspect a sprain or strain but it doesn't sound like you did that. If you do go see someone (doctor, chiro, osteo, pt) you can or should expect that they will take an xray. You can also expect that the probable treatment will be rest, ice, anti-inflammatory drugs, pain killers and a wrist brace until it gets better. I have personally either subluxed or dislocated bones in my right hand from falls twice in the last year. My own treatment on myself has been ice, lymphatic drainage and polarity.
