Devlan's Banded!

Well, we went to CT on May 1 for Devlan's casting, and his DOCBand arrived

early, so he's

been wearing it since May 11. We had to go back on the 12th for a tiny

adjustment, but

they saw us Friday afternoon with no problem.

For the most part, he seems to be adjusting fine, but we are having an issue

with heat rash

under his cheek pieces. I towel him off several times a day, and clean with 91%

alcohol.

Has anyone else seen this? Any advice?

On the insurance side, things are moving along...s l o w l y. Even though we

were

approved for Hanger, the ortho there had only done " six to ten " (her words)

helmets in the

year she's been doing helmets, so we decided to go with CT. Our ped gave us a

retro-

referral for DOC, but then that has to be denied by the HMO contractor before we

can

actually appeal to BlueShield. We'd like them to cover CT at the same level

they would

cover Hanger, but I think we're in for an uphill battle.

Most of the appeal letters here are trying to get coverage, but we're going for

a different

(more qualified) provider. Hazel's letter was helpful, but she unfortunately

had a huge

mess she could point to to prove her point. Thanks in part to this group, we

decided to

go straight to CT rather than give a rather inexperienced ortho a crack at

Devlan's skull,

but in some ways that limits our ability to provide proof that Hanger is not

qualified. (But

better that than the possibility of things not working right). Anyone else in

this position?

Any advice/resources/success stories?

Best regards,

Mom to Devlan, 10 1/2 months, DOCBand

Hi ,

It's great to hear that Devlan is on his way to a rounder noggin! It

takes some babies some time to adjust their body temp to their band.

Once he does, he shouldn't get anymore heat rashes. Are you dressing

him lighter than you normally do? I'm sorry I can't help you with your

insurance questions. Keep us posted on Devlan's progress and your

insurance. Good luck!

Hi ,

Yes, I've striped him down to just a onesie. Before, I would usually have him

in a footed

playsuit. We've actually gone a little too cool and I think he was having

trouble sleeping

because his legs got too cold (that is, trouble aside from the thing on his head

:) ), so I've

been experimenting with different clothing/blanket/fan options for naps and

bedtime. He

actually likes to be really bundled up to sleep, but we've switched to a cooler

cotton

blanket from his usual fleece, so between that and lighter clothing, I think

things are

about where he needs them to be comfortable.

Unfortunately, the ceiling fan is an issue for my older son, Logan. The two of

them share a

room, and Logan has some convoluted reasoning with leaps of logic only a 4 year

old can

make about why the ceiling fan is bad and would cut off his head. I think we'll

have to get

to the bottom of that particular problem as the weather warms up though.

The heat rash looked a bit better this evening - so I guess he's adjusting.

Regards,

I'd love to be in the mind of a 4 year old. I'd love to know what and

how they think. Pretty amazing stuff I'm sure. :-) I hope you're able

to get to the bottom of why he thinks the ceiling fan will cut off his

little head. Let us know what happens, please. I'm glad the heat rash

looks better now. Keep us posted!

Great to hear that Devlan has started with therapy. Hang in there as

far as insurance goes.
