One week from today I fly to Mexico for my RNY. My family is all asking

me what's going to prevent me from gaining all the weight I lose back.

I don't have an answer for them that they believe with my lifetime

history of lose and gain back more, lose and gain back more. Please

help me! I'm doubting my capabilities tonight.

Hi ,

I am Norma and I am just getting my intro together to send. but I wanted you

know, that there is no guarantee that you will not gain back some of the

weight. You must remember that this is a tool and not a cure all. It takes

lots

of determination on our part and lots of prayers and love from others.

I gained back 40 pounds but also I want to tell you, you will know how to

get the weight off from the start. Losing that weight is the easiest thing to

do for me now. because I know how to do it.

I lost 112 pounds and never reached my goal weight before I gained back the

40. However my down fall was coke. I love coke and when I started back on pop

I just about killed my self.

Just follow the rules and you will be fine. best thing I ever did.

Hi ,

I know for me I felt like I was going to be the one that this was not going

to work for. I am finding that it is up to me if that happens. The changes that

you make are going to have to be perminant. You will have to forever eat

healthy, exercise, take vitamins, and drink all that water. Say no to yourself A

LOT! You have to be dedicated and remember you are going to fall off here and

there, what matters is how fast your get back up. You can do it, we all are a

testimony of that. For those of us who have had the surgery understand how you

are feeling right now. It will also help if your family and friends support you

throughout this. Sometimes when I go out to lunch with my sister, she never puts

me in a position to not have a good menu to order from in a resturant. Our place

of choice is usually Penera Bread for their soup. Then she watches me and when

she sees that I am about to the point of full, she reminds me. I love her so

much for that because the first time we

went out, we were talking away and I was not paying attention to my food and

the next thing you know, my soup was gone and I was sick full. To have her

support me in this after all I have done, I couldn't be more grateful to have

her. You need a great support system and not to take it personal when they

remind you of stuff. Every little thing that will help you stay on track, let

it. You will be glad they did.

Wow this is probably the ultimate question. I'm not sure I could

answer this question if/when my folks/kids ask me this question. I

guess my quick answer would be, " YOU are going to keep me from

gaining the weight back, I need YOUR help! " Maybe that's too short on

logic and details and more emotion filled but really it's full of

truth. I know I depend on my kids to a great extent and my parents to

a lesser extent to fuel my efforts.

My kids are great in that they try all the crazy food I make now and

really get into some of the healthy stuff I'm eating and doing. My

parents encourage me out one side of their mouths while shoving

coffee cake and cookies into the other side of their mouths. My

mother is now getting harassed from her PCP to go to medical weight

loss for a diet because she's almost 65 and very obese. I suggest

investigating surgery but she doesn't want to have another surgery in

her life. I suggest she might want to consider it if she wants to

have a life period but encourage her to at least go to some sort of

medical diet stuff.

But what am I doing? I'm changing gradually and slowly so that I

develop life long habits instead of something that I'm going to start

quick, quit quick and fall back into weight gain. I hope you see the

irony in your family's pressure. Maybe you could point that out to

them? That irony is that you're supposed to be slowly developing life

long healthy exercise and eating habits but that they're pressuring

you to demonstrate RIGHT NOW how you're not going to gain the weight

back.

You're probably going to have to put up with their doubt and crap for

many months to come. Use it as a shield. Dare them to doubt you. Say

to them that it's fine that they doubt you. Let them know that you'll

be sure to give them quarterly or every half year meetings so you can

give them " I told you so " updates.

You'll then need to build up your exercise and positive diet habits

slowly over those periods and update your family. You can take this

to a great degree by maintaining a food and/or exercise diary. Flood

them with information if they're not happy with your weight loss then

show them how every month, every day, every hour you've kept track of

what you're doing. If they doubt that will continue ask them what

they consider " continuing " and " permanent " to be? They obviously have

some time frame in mind.

Unfortunately my vision of a time frame for me (and I suppose you) is

the rest of life. So if I was to say I doubt your ability to keep the

weight off I would have to maintain that doubt for the rest of your

life. That's going to be pretty tough for me to do especially as you

change your habits, lose the weight and then maintain it for a few

years. I'm betting your family gives up too. It's not going to be

easy but you can outlast your detractors. That's part of this

struggle. I'm not one of the detractors for the record.

I only hope that I can maintain my own self doubt to the extent where

I need it to maintain my fervor and yet not have it occupy my every

thought. It's a tough balance. This group and others are a great

support network though. It helps a lot to have support and to know

that you're not alone in what you're going through.

See Sharana makes a good point with her sister's support. Some people

could consider her sister's help as nagging. It's all a matter of

your mental attitude. Her sister is just trying to be involved and

helpful. The difference between how Shauna perceives that help and

someone who considers it harrassing is purely Shauna's mental

attitude. You have to have a positive mental attitude. It's

contagious too. Most likely her sister feels better when Shauna

thanks her and acts on her advice in a positive manner.

Way to go ladies!

Where in Mexico are you going? That's where I had mine done as well.

There's really no guarantee you'll not regain the weight other than

yourself. This is a life long commitment to changing the way you eat &

live.

Well you are taking a drastic last step measure and you are obviously

serious. Anyone who undergoes wls is obviously willing to make a real

dedicated effort. Will you gain your weight back? It is a possibility.

But, if you truly embrace your new tool and learn to use it

effectively;realize this is not a quick fix but a jump start to a new

way of living; make the lifestyle and mental changes needed; and set

up good eating and exercise habits from the get go it does not have to

be a probability.

Tell them that you are becoming as informed as you possibly can and

with their support and love you are determined to do it, and do it

right.

Thanks, all you guys, for the support. I've had a rough couple of days. I was

so confident, then Whammie! I know old habits have to be replaced by new ones,

and I do enjoy exercising..and know I will even more as I lose weight. I want

to be able to move around a tennis court enough to " play " so badly. The life of

a fat person sucks! Especially at this stage where it has affected my

functioning. I've failed at dieting so miserably for so many years...but I'm

hoping that not being able to overeat for a long enough period of time in the

beginning will enable me to firmly establish new habits and changes in

lifestyle. That must be the thing that helps so many people lose and keep it

off that have been fat all their lives?

I love you guys,

functioning.

Well you are taking a drastic last step measure and you are obviously

dedicated effort.

Tell them that you are becoming as informed as you possibly can and

with their support and love you are determined to do it, and do it

right.

Hi ,

I'm going to Hermosillo, to Dr Ungson. I wanted the DS...but the doc wouldnt

do it because I have Hepatitis C. Evidently malnutrition can cause liver

failure, and he thought there was too much of a risk of malnutrition w/ the DS.

Where did you go?

There's really no guarantee you'll not regain the weight other than

yourself. This is a life long commitment to changing the way you eat &

live.

I went to Monterrey to Dr. Rumbaut. There is a greater risk w/ DS for

malnutrition than RNY. I hope all goes well for you!
