The studies available on the BPD/DS indicate to date little (8-10 pounds) of late weight regain. Although we don't all end up " skinny " , typically with the BPd/DS what is lost is gone forever (except possibly 8 to 10 pounds). Guest guest
I think too much sugar will destroy any tool we have. That is why it was highly recommended that I have the RNY because I love sugar. If you dont have a real taste for sugar, then yes, you're pretty safe probably. But if you turn to sweets and start jacking up the empty calories, I think even with a BPD you will gain and certainly more than 8 or 10 lbs. Now that is what I was told over and over and over... You know I'd be really ticked if I find out there's a sugery out there that will allow me to eat a steady diet of cookies and ice cream and never gain weight, man, heaven on earth!!! I eat my protein first and then practice no restraint after that. I have certainly eaten my share of sweets (even more than I would like to admit) over the holidays and have not gained at all. You have to remember that most sweets are actually even more heavily laden with fat than sweets. Most of the fat in foods is malabsorbed, so the sweets are not as detrimental as you would think. I have been conscious not to start drinking sugary drinks. Actually until about 2 months ago, I drank several cups of coffee every morning with sugar in them. I decided to switch to splenda, thinking maybe it would affect my weight (just an experiment really) and still my weight stays the same. My weight is so stable (up and down in a 4 pound range) that it amazes me. I think I would have lost another 10 or 15 pounds if I didn't eat sweets, but also feel this would only have made me look older. Guest guest
Oh, I forgot to mention that little to no late regain with the BPD/Ds is documented in medical literature. In fact one study showed that there is a calorie maximum absorbtion level after the BPD (precursor to the BPd/DS) suggesting that after a certain number of calories--all the rest is malabsorbed and not used by the body at all. Guest guest
Sugar plus grazing is an unbeatable combo to get you back to your start weight. As a radical distal, I should NOT be able to regain, malabsorb fats, tiny pouch, dumping--I have it all. But several of my peers at 3 yrs are back to full size, one at 250, one at 450. Don't hurt yourself by thinking that you cannot out eat any of these procedures. It's real and it hurts. Only true of RNY. Sorry. Michele B.
