Guest guest
Here is the response I received from Designer Protein's customer service department today. I have also included my original email to them. So, now, how about comments from everybody about this. As I read it, it still says not to put it in very hot liquids because it lessens the bioavailability of the protein. How do you read it? Chrissie heating protein question and more I am a gastric bypass patient and use Designer Whey protein as a nutritional supplement. Since this is my main means of nutrition, I have to be sure of what I am doing. I need to know if Designer Protein can be added to hot and/or boiling liquids? Can it be used in baking? Are there certain fruits/ vegetables that cannot be mixed with the protein, such as pineapple and papaya, which I have read elsewhere. Have you studied these properties to see if the protein is still available for absorption if it is heated or certain fruits/vegs/ juices are added? Thank you very much for any information you can give me. I am also connected to many other gastric bypass support groups and this information will be shared by all. Walsh shihtzumom@... Am I understanding that what the company is saying is that the protein changes form but remains the same amount (gramwise per scoop), we just can't use it? So what good is it if we can't absorb it? Or did I misunderstand? --- ...snip... Well, that is kind of what I understood from it too. We just can't absorb it...if it is heated, that is, because it changes. It is still protein, but not as bioavailable to us. If we had " normal " insides, then maybe it wouldn't matter as much. This stuff is really made for athletes, not for gastric bypass patients. Athletes don't usually have impaired absorption, like we do. So we have to read everything from our particular point of reference, which IS malabsorption already. We don't need more. I, for one, don't want to take the chance. I'm sticking with non-heated liquids with my protein powder. I'd rather not become malnourished to find out. Guest guest
< Okay...I *am* a WLS patient (SRVG) but I do NOT have any malabsorption problem! So....would there still be bioavailability issues for me??? Are there for normies??? I'm not clear on this. I missed out on the relation to lessened bioavailability and those with bypasses. I thought it was meant for everyone??? I have not been heating my protein powders due to thinking I would be compromising it's effectiveness...but now I'm really confused! If it's a matter of not being effective only for those with bypasses I'd like to know so I can go ahead and have a hot one every now and then! :-) A. in Indy _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp. Guest guest
It changes the character of the protein, for everyone. That's probably the answer you're after. But should I post the BV list again? Just as a reminder? Guest guest
It would be for everybody,................... but those with malabsorption need to consider it even more because they already malabsorb and would malabsorb even more if the protein were heated. At least that's how I read it.
