OT: Home Invasion

This morning at 7 am I was the victim of an " attempted " home

invasion. I was sound asleep and heard some one banging on the door

and ringing the doorbell. I had looked through the peephole and

noticed a black baseball cap.Thinking it was my husband I opened the

door.

This guy just walked in asking me to sign papers saying he was with

the DEA.I noticed a pick up truck backed up in our drive way and a

large dog cage sitting in the drive way.I asked what the dog cage

was for and he said he was supposed to pick up my dog.Something felt

wrong.... I was still in my night gown..... half asleep......... but

my brain finally clicked in gear.Somehow I had this guy step outside

the door and I closed it.

I called the DEA office and was told that was not how they operate

and they would have shown a badge and have a yellow/green vest on.

Their vehicles have lights on the top like police vehicles do.

I filed a report with the police and I was told to consider my self

lucky and to be more vigilant before opening a door .

Most likely they had observed my husband leaving and were checking

to see if any one else was home.

Just wanted to pass this on to every one.You always hear about it on

the news and never imagine it could happen to you.

But it does !!!

So very glad you're OK, ! Personally, I would like to see everyone take

a self defense class. It teaches more than just physical moves. It's a scary

position to be in, as I was in the same position once, and even being a 3rd

degree black belt, I was scared! Never show you're scared!

You were VERY lucky indeed.

only yesterday i saw a program on this and they said if you can't

just get them to leave (like you bravely managed)then your best bet

is to GET OUT of the house, as possesions can be replaced but people

can't... i hope you got this loosers licence/rego number and the cops

can track this leach down and toss his sorry behind back under what

ever rock he crawled out of...

i have a security screen door on my front door and this means i can

lock it (or hubby can when he leaves) and then when i answer my front

door i can see and talk to the person but am behind a metal

(aluminium i think) screen (with metal fly screens (to keep bugs out

too)) so that no one can gain access weithout my unlocking this

door... it is also great in summer because i can leave my front door

open and allow the breeze in but NOT the bugs or unwanted people etc.

i am so glad that you are OK... some one was watching over you to

have been able to get this person out of your home like you did...

Oh my goodness! How scarey!

Thank goodness you got him to go back outside~

Can you remember what the pickup truck looked like?

Just be sure to keep an eye out for a while. He may have been " casing " your

home, seeing what he could steal.

You should tell your neighbors too. Just in case!

I'm glad to hear you are ok. I worry about this kind of thing happening to me,

cause I'm home all day usually by myself. I always keep the door locked, and

look out the front window before opening it.

I also have 2 dogs that bark pretty loud whenever someone comes to the door, or

even goes in front of our house (we are in a cul-de-sac, so not too many people

come by) even if they are in a car.

I think my dogs would protect me from anyone. Well, at least Snowy would.

Stella would probably run and get a ball, hoping the person will want to play

with her!!! lol

Sorry to hear this happened to you. I'm glad it wasn't more serious and

that you are alright. For everyone, here are some other tips to help you

protect yourself.

Keeping a baseball bat or night-stick behind the door is good for quick

defense. If someone comes at you grab the bat and start swinging. Home

invaders usually want victims who will be docile and do as they are told.

Don't worry about dislocating something - dislocated shoulder is a good

trade for protecting your life. They don't want you to fight or make noise.

Scream like the world is ending and beat them back with the stick. Pepper

spray is also nice for this sort of thing.

NEVER open the door if you don't know who it is. Ask them to identify

themselves before you answer the door. If they say they are with an agency,

tell them you are going to call to verify with the agency first. Most

likely, if you are going to receive a visit from the phone company, police,

or pest control they will be wearing a uniform. If the person outside is

not in uniform, it's a pretty good clue they aren't who they claim to be.

ALWAYS get to know your neighbors. If you know who your neighbors are, you

will recognize them when they come to borrow a cup of sugar. They will also

be more likely to come to your aid if they know you.

I also have a security screen on my door, usually I never even open

the door because I am home alone most of the day.

Seeing the black baseball cap through the peephole in the door I

just assumed it was my husband.

This is one of the reasons these " creeps " hit early in the morning

when you are up and barely awake and your brain is still in bed.

I never thought to check the license plates or anything.

Like I said, I was up but my brain was still in bed !

We have all kinds of security systems in the house but never used

them because of the " inconvenience " . Needless to say, they are set

now and my husband and I set up this code where he will always call

me before he would ever ring the doorbell. So this way I will not

ever again open the door to any one I don't know.

Lesson Learned!!

Thanks Bonnie H. for your e -mail, appreciate you thinking of me!!

I immediately called my neighbors as some of them leave the

garagedoor open.... car running .....while they get something in the

house.

I was told by the police officer ,that now they have a can of spray

mace available that is the same strenght as what the police

uses .That it would be a good idea to have it with me when I walk

every morning ,with my friend ,and to keep it handy by the

front door too.

I came to Las Vegas from a small rural town in Missouri and I am

just not used to the " Big City Life " yet and all it brings with it.

Thank you all for your concern, justed wanted to share this

experience with you so that this does not happen to you!!

Thanks ,

we have made some changes at our house already and will make some

more because of what happened.Things we should have done before but

YES YES YES!!! I could not agree more. Women and people with disabilities

are more likely to be targets of violent crime because we are considered

easy prey. There are things we can do to protect ourselves from becoming a

crime statistic and I encourage EVERYONE to protect themselves. I've talked

about this on the list many times over the years, but it always bears

repeating. I don't have time to go into more detail, but if anyone wants

more info on self defense, I will be happy to post more info to a file on

the list website.
