I have the same kind of pain, especially in my legs and arms, which the

doctor diagnosed as neuropathy.. He put me on Neurotinin 300mg twice a day. I

had the same kind of reaction with lispinoral.. they had to switch me to a

different medication

The blood pressure med that works for me is Atenolol (50 mg). After a

recent angioplasty they changed it to lisinopril because they thought it

would not only lower blood pressure but slow my heart rate. It did neither.

I'm back on Atenolol. My regular doctor didn't understand why they made

that switch.

As for the shoulder and arm problem there are lots of reason that you could

be having problems. I have a problem (pain & numbness) with my right arm

because I use my PC so much and I have lots of tendonitis all over my body

(trigger fingers on both hands, two inflamed tendons in my left thumb (it's

identical to the problem that people who over use Blackberries get) and

meralgia paresthetica where a tendon is pushing on nerves in my hip that

cause a numbness and tingling in the top and front side of my thigh. The

first doctor I had diagnosed the problems as neuropathy in the case of the

leg tingling and a lot of the problems with my right arm. My shoulder and

arm problems get worse if I sleep on my side and it gets turned under. Part

of that happens because I'm out of shape and don't have the same level of

muscle tone. That isn't the cause but it aggravates it.

There are some weird diabetic complications like a stiff shoulder and

diabetic stiff hand which can also be painful that I didn't know about until

I decided to search on my own for the problem with my leg and why I was

having so many problems with my tendons. By the time I'd identified the

problems on line I'd changed primary doctors and my new one quickly came to

the same conclusions. They shot the trigger fingers up with a steroid and

that pretty much solved that problem. They sent me to physical therapy for

exercises to deal with the shoulder, arm and leg problems. It's making a

difference.

For the shoulder/arm you might want to search using diabetic frozen shoulder

http://www.diabetes.org/type-1-diabetes/frozen-shoulder.jsp or diabetic

stiff shoulder.

Question: what can I do?

I have High Blood Pressure as well as diabetes and have been on Lisinopril

for the last 2 1/2 months. This doesn't seem to be helping the BP much and

I get really dizzy when I work and see spots if I have to look up at

anything.

Does anyone have any ideas what I can do to help get rid of this pain and

get my BP down? I have increased the Glucophage to 1000 mg as I was told to

and now my BS is going up a little, too. When I was taking 500 mg it was

staying below 135 and now has been up to over 150. This while I was eating

the same things I was before with less than 30 grams of carbs.

Meralgia paresthetica is more common in overweight people, diabetics and

pregnant women. There isn't much they can do for it except for the patient

to lose weight. The stretching exercises they gave are designed to help

stretch the tendon that's pressing on the nerve, but that's only temporary.

The physical therapy consisted of teaching me how to do the stretches they

gave me. The three stretches they gave me are listed as Hip Flexor stretch;

Pirformis stretch, and a tensor stretch. It's a little difficult for me to

describe them, but pictures should be available on line somewhere.

For the arm and shoulder they suggested I sit and use my computer in a more

ergonomic posture. That isn't really helping. Since I haven't been using

my trackball I've had less problems with my hands, but I've also had them

shot up with a steroid. That really helped. Nothing has helped with the

two inflamed tendons by my left thumb. I think they are being aggravated by

my Airedale who sometimes pulls on the leash when he spots a cat.

Massages didn't do anything for me other than some short term relief.

Neither did regular chiropractic adjustments.

I did buy a book called Stretching by Bob that has those 2 of the 3

stretches in them (#5 on page 112; #12 on page199 without the head turn.

The 3rd stretch isn't in the book but there are others that work on that

area.) If the problems you're experiencing are caused by or aggravated by

tight tendons and muscles you might want to pick up this book or a similar

one and take it with you to the clinic and discuss with them which ones

might be beneficial to you. The book I bought is $16 new according to

the cover. Amazon.com has them for $11.53. If you buy more than $25 at a

time from them shipping is free. Amazon.com's used book section has them

available at a slight discount but not enough to cover the cost of shipping.

The book or a similar one should also be available at your local library.

You can always copy the pages showing the stretches you and the doctor

thought would help. That's basically what the physical therapist did for me

plus had me practice them a couple of times in the office.

When I had Bell's Palsy a couple years ago they also gave me a set of

exercises/stretches from the same book to keep my facial muscles from

atrophying while we waited for the viral infection to go away from the nerve

(the herpes virus that gives you a canker sore infects the nerve and it

swells. That nerve has to go through a passage through bone and when

infected and it swells it gets pinched and that causes the muscles on one

side of your face to be paralyzed. Your face slumps on that side.). I did

those exercises religiously and that side of my face actually looks better

now than the unaffected side.

Re: Question: what can I do?

Thank you for your reply. Is there anything that you could do for those

problems to lessen them before you went to physical therapy? Is there

anything that worked temporarily for you so you could continue to work?

I have called them and they will not return the calls. I have called them 4 or

5 times and they have never returned the call. The spots are from the high

blood pressure, too. I was seeing them before I went to the eye doctor in

October.

Hi, It sounds like you need to let them know how this med is affecting

you. It's not good to continue if it is causing dizziness. I wonder

if you called and asked them to let you know what to do and the

symptoms perhaps they could suggest something before your next appt.

As for seeing spots I would see an opthamologist about that. Anything

like that should be evaluated asap.

> I also have neuropathy and am not sure if the other problems I have

are due to that or not. My right arm hurts terribly all the time if I

have to reach up and my back hurts so that I can hardly stand up.

I had the frozen shoulder problem like was mentioned in another post

and was doing physical therapy but they put me on skelaxin which is a

muscle relaxer and a pain med. I know it was practically impossible

to get relief right away though. I really feel for you. Seems the

more it hurts the more tense the muscles get too. If you could try

some slow breathing and relaxation methods it might help. Physical

therapy had me really concentrate on relaxing the muscles.

Well I know that with the muscle pain it will cause the blood pressure

and blood sugar to go up. I sure hope they can see you soon or at

least maybe call in a prescription for you. Do you think if you

called they would do that? perhaps talk to a nurse? Other than that

the stretching recommendations are mainly what helps, that and pain

meds.

I don't have any option of changing clinics. This is a city health facility. I

don't make enough money to pay my utilities most of the year, much less

insurance or doctors visits. When you call there, all you get is the stupid

computer message machine and you can leave a message at some number. I couldn't

even get the bottles of meds changed to an easy-open top (I have no kids, only

dogs) because there is no option to talk to anyone at the fill pharmacy. You go

in and IF you have an appointment, you check in for the appointment. It is

almost impossible to get an appointment. The only reason I have one for Tuesday

is the Diabetes Nurse made it.

Re: Re: Question: what can I do?

Well you really need to go to their office ASAP and don't leave until

you've talked to the doctor about both the symptoms and the fact that they

don't return your calls. I wouldn't wait for an appointment. You need to

do this even if you don't have an appointment!! You need to give them the

dates and times of the call. Also if you talked to a real person who you

talked to. I'd bring it with you in writing. Keeping a copy for yourself

of course. This is totally unsatisfactory.

I hope you've been leaving a longer message than just to have them call

you. I'd be giving them the symptoms including your BP readings and that

your very concerned. I'd also document when I called them. That way you

are putting them on notice of a potential malpractice situation.

If they are part of a medical group like FACI, Kaiser, Tennant or a

smaller one you also need to talk to the management of the group as well.

If you have dates and times, people etc I'd probably call first and then

put it in writing. Nicely and factually. Not returning a call after 4 or

5 attempts to reach a doctor with symptoms your describing is either a

problem with the doctor or the clinics front office. In either case the

group management should be concerned.

.

I'd also changing doctors/clinics if you have that option.

Thank you so much Sandy. I have a couple of those, but haven't been real

regular in taking them. I think I also have magnesium with calcium. I have no

blood thinners so they should be okay.

Darlene

Re: Question: what can I do?

Garlic, COQ10, magnesium are all good for blood pressure. My BP is not high

although it was getting there. I started taking garlic supplements and eating

more natural garlic (already take COQ10 and magnesium) but my last bp was 112/70

something. It was 120 to 130 something before. ALSO, I am exercising which

is on of the best way to lower everything from blood pressure, to blood sugar to

cholesterol.

Obviously, so is the effect of Lisinopril, which is the DRUG of choice for

lowering blood pressure.

And what do you do when they completely ignore you? I got a monitor

and have been checking the BP and I called and left the message that

it was not coming down, that I was getting dizzy and seeing spots,

and that I was in constant pain. I was completely ignored. I do

not have any choice of where I can go, like I said before. I cannot

afford to go anywhere else because I usually get less than

$400/month pay and my mortgage is over $500.

If you go to the ER they can NOT turn you away. My hubby and I had some

issues a few years ago and we didn't have insurance. I made him go to the

er and when they sent the bill there was a form on the back I could fill out

for medical assistance, they actually wrote off most of the bill and the

only thing we had to pay was $50 or so. You can also make payments if you

can't afford to pay the bill all at once. Even if it is only 10$ they

cannot turn you into collection because you are making the effort to pay the

bill off. No matter what your Health and your LIFE is depending on it! You

need to seek some sort of medical help to find out exactly what is going on

before it gets out of control!

I have an appointment for next week, but I wanted to get some answer to get the

dizziness stopped. I cannot get medicaid, only CICP. that is only allowed

through certain clinics. I guess that even though they seem to be pretty nice,

like just about everywhere in Denver, if you are not rich and pretty you don't

have a right to live.

Re: Question: what can I do?

Darlene, it looks like you need a follow up appointment

for sure because some clinics will only work with you

while you are in their office. I hate it that you

can't get answers by phone and hope that you will get

the help you need when you are there in person. If

you can, you might go by the clinic to explain the

urgency of having one or more follow up apppointments.

I guess they fear malpractice from working by phone.

I hope you can be polite but very, very persistent

because you are your own best advocate. I'm sorry

you don't have better choices. Do you have Medicaid

perhaps and are there any other clinics you can use?

I hope you can get more attention if you are there in

their face, up close and personal, but very polite

and sweet.

I would have to go to the walk-in clinic, not the emergency room,

since I haven't actually passed out. That takes several hours, I

have to pay for parking down there, it is several miles farther than

the clinic I go to and they are VERY uncaring.

As for the job part, I have been looking for a good job since 1991.

The job I have is the only one I have been able to get other than a

couple that turned out business owned by dishonest people (one a

definite crook). I have still been looking since then. But when

you have someone tell you that no one will hire you because they

don't want someone so ugly working for them and then the other

people won't even interview you once you get there, it's hard. I am

now trying to get a certificate for something, but I can't even get

information from them since I asked about their financial aid policy

(which is mentioned on their website, but they won't answer).

I trust that you turned them into your state's EEOC. I'm not sure what sort of

Well, I finally got through to my medical provider and got read the

riot act. They simply DO NOT answer any questions like that. You

either get an appointment by calling in late in the afternoon the day

before you want it or you go downtown if it is an emergency. Getting

an appointment that way is just about impossible, so you just have to

keep trying every afternoon for an appointment. And they think my

blood pressure monitor is not working properly.

So I have to go in on Friday with all my readings.

Thanks to everyone for their help. I'm still going to try the garlic

and such.

Actually, the burdin of proof isn't on you. You make the complaint and the EEOC

investigates. The bit about 'not hiring women' you definately should have

reported. The EEOC can only act if people file complaints, and as long as

nobody turns these people in, they will be able to continue getting away with

discriminatory practices.

Have you checked into temp agencies like Adecco and Express Personnel? They're

always looking for people, and some of their jobs pay very well, especially if

you have strong skills. They also have training programs that you can use to

upgrade your computer skills.

Re: Question: what can I do?

I didn't turn them in. I'd have had to been able to prove what she

said. I worked on computers for about 8 years before being laid

off, mostly word processing or just typing before the computers for

the engineering fields. I worked for a city public works, so have

experience with real estate descriptions. Also worked for a title

insurance company inputting real estate documentation. I also have

done medical billing, but don't have the certificate they now

require for you to do that. And I have a degree in Animal Science,

but was raised in the city and when I got my degree they just plain

didn't hire women from the city for jobs in Animal Science or even

office jobs in the livestock industry. The last five years I've

been doing retail inventory.

In 91-92 around here the burden of proof was on the prospective employee or

employee. We saw something of that at . I have applied at many temporary

agencies and they wouldn't send me anywhere. However, someone I knew who had

way less skills than me and is a very rude person was never without a job. Just

got in on her looks. That is why I get so upset.

Thank you for your suggestions.

The last five years I've

been doing retail inventory.

what sort of discrimination it would come under, but I'm sure that

it is in contravention of the equal employment laws.
