Good question! I guess I would say if it interferes with your sleep a lot,

then I'd go to the doctor. Just my thoughts.

I am presently going through a tremendous bout of tailbone pain and ran

across this site. I thought it was pretty good so I thought I would pass it

along.

http://www.coccyx.org/

Though I honestly don¹t know if my pain is from the tailbone, the

spondyliothesis or slipped discs or sciatica or narrowing of the spinal

column or the bone spurs ... Or .... Or.....

For me, I go to the ER when my pain gets out of control (I get to a

point where I simply can't cope with it (I have had to call an

ambulance when I was in this state before from hip pain as I couldn't

sit down), also if it feels WRONG, I don't mean my normal wrong like

it is out and I need to put it back etc but you know (I hope) that

feeling that something about it just ISN'T right, I tend to know when

there is more to it than what there should be (like my foot and being

told it was just bruising and when I demanded a MRI it turned out to

be MANY torn ligamanets and resulted in my in a cast for 6 weeks then

a cam walker for 3 months and now special orthotics), also i would go

if I simply can't get a dislocation back in (and if I couldn't get to

my osteopath who is OH so much gentler to relocate things, it is not

very painful at all and feels oh so much better when back in place

and he also massages etc to make sure there are no spasms etc) and if

I have a new problem on the weekend that can't wait until Monday (as

seeing the CALMS doctors (our out of hours clinic) is VERY expensive.

Good Luck and use the ER service when you feel you need it.

Thanks for the reply lana. It is a question I bump into a lot. I was using

the 'if it falls off it is time to be seen for it' approach. :-l

This weekend I was hit with the flu and stress and all menstrual; couldn¹t

take my pain meds - my GERD was out of control; laid in bed for three days

moaning and lost concept of 'time'; and then this tailbone pain kicked in

when I finally could become vertical again. I don't have a lot of faith

that if I went into ER to the degree that I was sick that I would be able to

tell them the assorted issues; afraid that they would do this or that to me

and it would be the domino effect. I don¹t know how to describe it any

better then that.

Aj, I'm sorry that you are in such pain. Pain there can be such a pain in the

a - -! Literally! When I've had pain there, I've found that my TENS unit

helps. Do you have one of those? I keep it on 24 hours a day til I have to

change

the battery and it helps get me though the acute episode.

Take care,

Thank you for the reply

No; I don¹t have a TENS. I saw one in an ad and thought about just getting

one without a doctor's prescription. I don¹t know how to use one though.

Is there a " Dummy Guide to TENS " out there?

One thing I found was that if I locked my legs into position and just stayed

inside that pain 'throb' (for lack of a better word) that eventually I would

get used to the degree of pain. It was moving, shifting that really did me

in. Unfortunately it was one of those things where it hurts to sit, stand

and lay down and I found myself roaming a lot trying to just make it stop.
