The RSD in my left foot and lower calf were not an issue since they aren't used in driving an automatic. I'm trying to tell myself that it's not as bad as it sounds but it just sucks. Although a formal write-up of the eval will follow, the OT stated that at this point I could only drive "with medical clearance from my physician." I explained, given liability issues, that would leave him in a position of saying "never" and that I had been letting him know that I am now only rarely driving (just short trips to the drug store or grocery store) and even then only when I felt that I was alert and okay to drive. She then agreed to additionally check off "limit driving to short trips within your local area" and added the words "using judgment re: time of day and how you feel." When I see my physician on Monday I plan to be forthcoming with him about my request to include thatpart. Things now stand that I will only drive under the previously stated conditions until my meds have been fully adjusted and the doctor and I agree that I am ready to proceed to the "next step." I will then have to meet at least once with a "certified driving instructor" to learn how to drive a car that has the modifications (a knob on the steering wheel and an extension on the directional signals so that I can use my right hand instead) that will later have to be installed in my car. When the instructor thinks that I have mastered these, he will then set up an appointment with the RMV for an on-road test with a state trooper. The instructor will accompany me on the road test and I will rent his vehicle for the test. If I pass the test then I will make arrangements for the purchase and installation of the modifications. Looks like things will not be moving along nearly as swiftly as I had hoped. My benefit time at work will obviously run out before all of this can fall into place, leaving me without income. I truly hope that I get approved for the LTD and that it doesn't take too long. I've already sent in the PVTA van application and should hear a reply within the next 3 weeks. What to say? I'm incredibly discouraged, but trying to hang in. As my great aunt used to quote "Life ain't all you want, but it's all you have, so have it, stick a geranium in your hat, and be happy." I will dig up one of the ones left over from my summer garden and keep it inside as a reminder. Barbara
