Guest guest
Hi guys, I have been experiencing something the last few days that has me a little stumped. I have definitely been trying to eat more protein than carbohydrates and seem that every couple of hours I have been getting hungry and was wondering if anyone in the group had experienced this problem and what you were able to do about it. Any advice or suggestions here would be greatly appreciated. Lin Lhsh@... American by birth, Saved by the grace of God. -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Guest guest
Lin, Sorry for all the questions especially if you've already mentioned this in the past, but: When was your surgery? What exactly are you eating (examples)? How long are you spending at eating? How much water/fluids are you getting in? How many meals/snacks are you having and are they somewhat regularly occuring? I find that if I'm hungry (and I am every few days) that if it isn't time for a meal or a snack having a glass of water helps a lot. Guest guest
I appreciate that. I am about three months out and am eating as much protein as I can. I have been trying to eat every two to three hours with some sort tofu a protein for a snack and either water or Krystal Lite to drink as well. Lhsh@... American by birth, Saved by the grace of God. Guest guest
How much are you eating roughly? Are you eating until full or are you having 2 to 3 bites and stop. Maybe " if you aren't eating until full " take one more bite and see if this helps hold you over. With you eating every 2 to 3 hours I would do what Mike suggested, drink. I would have some water or crystal light 45 min after you eat and keep downing it until 30 min before your next meal. See if this helps. Guest guest
Lin, Three months was one of the more unsure times for me at least. Up until that point everything had been pretty regimented. There were schedules, lists of foods, supplements, dairies, lots of meetings/appts with the surgeon's people, etc., all very nice for someone like me who appreciates that sort of structure. Then at my three month appointment they sit me in a group and say that we can't have surgery liquids of any time. Check! (I'm thinking cool, more lists and regulations), they even give a list of no nos. Then they say we can only eat for 20-30 minutes now, no more spending an hour trying to eat because I guess now you'd be considered grazing sort of. Check! Now we needed to start taking a Calcium Citrate supplement. Check! Boy this was great stuff! Then they dropped the bomb, " Oh and you can pretty much eat anything you want now. " I beg your freaking pardon? That's what got me into the whole overweight problem in the first place folks! This is not good! Plus I was under the impression there would be certain bad things to eat. I was assured there were and that they would result in dumping and other side effects but that I could still consume them if I could deal with the results. Well that's sort of silly in my mind because I'm certainly not going to tempt/invite dumping. Ewww right? Still I left a little dejected that even though I'm structured to 20- 30 minutes I now have " anything " to put in there. Damn. I decided right then and there that I was going to try to build some specific foods that I could have for quick standbys and repeat meals where I knew what to expect and then to also have types of foods where I could pick and choose. Of course that changes as I find different tastes, discover ingredients, read labels, etc. But it's all something I get to work at. I find now that I, out of habit, read every single nutrition label of everything new I buy. I also have a regime I stick to going out where I ask for everything off to the side (so I have to see/build and get involved in what I'm eating), no sauces other than maybe mustard, replace all fries/chips with vegetables or nothing, no drinks (no thank you, go away now please), and bring me a box at the end of the meal. I still have the structure I crave in a way. Whoa that's a lot off subject, back to you being hungry. I find that if I eat more solid foods I seem to stay full for a longer period. I still eat some soft foods but not as often. I find that jerky (recently I've found turkey jerky at Costco), soy chips, broccoli, chicken, shrimp, small apples, small pears, and eggs do a pretty good job of staying put for quite a while and tiding me over for a good 4+ hours until a snack or other meal. I also stick religiously to the no drinking 15 minutes before, during or 45 minutes after that my surgeon recommends (others seem to have different numbers but the same sort of no drinking idea). Also, as I said in the first reply, I drink a lot between meals. There might be some boredom or coping going on here too. I'm not really able to tell even with myself when I'm hungry for those reasons. That's why I try to keep my meals/snacks relatively scheduled and just drink, walk, or something else when I'm bored or stressed/depressed. This is sort of a tough area for me at least. You probably should talk this stuff out with a professional if you think it might be something in this area. In fact checking with your dietician would be a great idea all the way around. I was losing weight like mad around three months. Pretty wild isn't it? I'm not losing so much now. I've only lost 30lbs in the last three months but I am concentrating more on cardio and weight training. I guess for a normal weight person that is still pretty incredible. If you'd like some specific recipes or maybe just a " day in the life of " stuff that I eat, when, how fast, etc. let me know and I can record a couple days and email you directly.
