Hi Mindy,

People can have type 2 diabetes without being overweight. You need to

discuss this with her doctor and don't give up until you get an answer.

I have been a little worried about my almost 3 year old daughter.

Yesterday between 9:30am and 3:00pm, she peed 5 times and she had

only had about a cup of liquids during that time. So I decided to

check her blood sugar, she loves doing this. It was 137 and it had

been about 4 hours since she had ate or drank anything besides

water. I checked it again last night around 7 when she was napping

and it was 110, then I checked it around midnight when she was

asleep and it was 140. This morning her fasting was 106. Then

after lunch, it was 174. Does anyone know if it is normal for a non

diabetic to have readings this high sometimes. I have talked to her

doctor about this once before and she said that it is nothing to

worry about. But I know that for me, if I had consistant readings

of 174, I would be worried. I dont check it often, so I don't know

if it always runs like this or not. I don't think it could be type

1 because the numbers are to low, and I don't think it could be type

2 because she is not at all 'overweight' she is around the 50%

percentile for her weight and height. Maybe I am just worrying too

much, I hope that is all it is.

Hi Mindy,

The rise could be from a number of things - Infection (namely an oncoming

bladder infection in this case), cold, flu, any illness and dehydration and of

course diabetes. A person also doesn't need to be overweight for T2. I suggest

to keep monitoring your daughter with how much she voids (pees) and get her to

drink more liquids and to inform the doctor of your concerns.

Mindy,

I wouldn't accept a doctor saying " don't worry about it " . Ask and

insist on a glucose tolerance test. Has that dr ever done a fasting

blood sugar on her as part of a check up? If they don't want to do

the glucose tolerance test or fasting blood sugar, at least go to a

pharmacy and buy a $20 A1C test. It's a home test which measures a 3 mo

average of blood sugars. That will at least tell you whether you should

pursue this or not. Record the results and take to the dr. Personally

I had too many drs say " don't worry about it " when in reality I should

have trusted my own gut feeling. Sometimes they just assume as a female

we are overly concerned about things. The numbers sounds kind of high

to me. You can get the test over the counter in the section with

diabetic supplies. I've done that on my kids just to be sure.

It might give you more peace of mind than that dr did.

Well I think I have found the culprit of my daughters high blood

sugars. This morning she woke up vomiting. She has thrown up 3 times

this morning and can't keep anything down. I am going to recheck her

blood sugar in a few days after she gets over this virus, I am also

swithcing her pediatricians to one who is more understanding of things

like this. This morning her fasting blood sugar was 114.
