Guest guest
Hi everyone, I recently started a *diet*. I find it hard to eat anymore, I don't know whats wrong with me but I am obsessed with every single calorie. If I go out to a buffet, I'll eat until I'm full, and wont have anything else the entire day, maybe a snack for dinner. I know I'm having 800-1,200 calories a day maybe!. Question: Do you have to go on a supervised diet before your surgery? How much food can you eat in one sitting after recovery? How long did it take from your first appointment after being referred until your surgery.. what is involved in the process.. any Kaiser members have imput?? Thanks! Guest guest
Do you have to go on a supervised diet before your surgery? No, but many people do. I belive Kaiser does. How much food can you eat in one sitting after recovery? At about the 2 to 3 month mark I was able to eat 2 to 4 OZ of food at a time. How long did it take from your first appointment after being referred until your surgery.. what is involved in the process.. any Kaiser members have imput?? I don't have Kaiser. I have a PPO and it took me 3 months from start to surgery. Hugs!!!!

Guest guest
I used to do that before surgery, with the buffet I mean. I find it hard to believe that even a small plate of buffet food couldn't be more than 1200 calories all on its own. What sort of buffet food are you eating? Questions answered below. > > > Hi everyone, > I recently started a *diet*. I find it hard to > eat anymore, I don't know whats wrong with me but I am obsessed with every > single calorie. I had to keep a food diary for some months. I could have lied my ass off on it. Come to think of it unless a doctor is actually present while you eat I don't think any sort of supervised diet is worth crap. That being said I think most insurances have provisions where you at least attempted to diet for 6+ months. Mine did. I told my doctor how I'd lost about 100lbs a few years before on a modified Atkins/South Beach diet only to gain it and more back. She signed off on that. > > > How much food can you eat in one sitting after > recovery? > That varies WIDELY between individuals and certainly depends on how long after surgery you're talking about. After about four months I could eat a relatively normal amount (Whatever that means right?) just a lot more slowly (20-30 minutes not 5 mintes). > > How long did it take from your first appointment > after being referred until your surgery.. what is involved in the process.. > any Kaiser members have imput?? Again that depends on your surgeon's calendar, your insurer's professionalism, your calendar, etc. I told my PCP I wanted to get the surgery in early August of 2005. She submitted the request formally to my insurance on a Friday. I was approved the next Monday afternoon. They must have seen my 64.5 BMI and fast tracked it. I scheduled appoints galore with the surgeon's office and went to all of them over the next 2.5 months. I lost 30 or so pounds over that time as I was told to by my surgeon's office. I told my surgeon's office that I didn't want to have surgery until after the first of the year because I wanted to apply the approximately $1400 to my flexible benefits for the next year. They said that's fine so long as I didn't regain much weight over the holidays. I lost another 6 pounds I think and about mid-December I scheduled my surgery for Jan 20, 2006. > > Thanks! > > Dawnyel > > 295/255/150 > > >

Guest guest
Donna, Thanks for all your input, it sounds like you have a really great doctor! did you have a mini gastric bypass or a different procedure? I'm really thinking about the mini, it sounds the least invasive and it doesn't take as long as other surgeries, plus it's done laprascopic, and I've had arthroscopy done on my knees, and it wasn't that bad. I'm hoping Kaiser doesn't take that long, they haven't called yet to book an appt. I'm kind of fearing them saying no, because I've already lost some weight. When I started back at Kaiser in April 2006 I was 280 and now I'm 255. I guess I'm afraid of him agreeing with my PCP that I'm too young and I can loose weight on my own. -Dawnyel 295/255/150 Hopefully I will get down below 255 soon, I've been stuck at 255/256 for over a week ugh! Guest guest
Dawnyel, I think most people have differant experiances on certain things, like whether or not you have to lose weight beforehand, what your insurance demands, etc, I was so incredibly lucky. I had planned surgery in Nov, then found my insurance would be ending in Sept. My WLS Dr and his office worked miracles to get me in and done before my insurance ended. They took what would be a 12-14 week process and cut it in half. I was also not required to lose any weight before hand, although strangely I did. I think it may be because I started switching to some " diet " stuff beforehand so the taste differance wouldn't be as glaring. From what I have been reading, it sounds like I got off easy all the way around. My Dr is one of the most respected in the East Coast and people come from all over to get the surgery from his clinic. And he still takes Medicaid, and then pulled strings here and there to get me in and done before I lost my insurance. I cannot express how grateful I am to all of them. This road has started out a bit bumpy, but I have had some wonderful people smoothing it out for me. And btw... just for those who remember my first frantic post about not losing the way I was supposed to, and having been stuck at 300 lbs for a week, You all were right, since then, about a week or so ago, I have lost 10 more pounds, so thank you again. I am so proud, I am thinking of adding a tagline WLS 9-18-06 Was 315 am 285. P.S. Sorry to turn that into all about me Dawnyel, but I hoped I gave some info that might help. Guest guest
Dawnyel, I had a full Laproscopic RNY. It really wasn't that bad. I was up and moving the first day. One of the nurses came on shift thinking I was visiting, not a patient. I have been so blessed, no complicatiopns, no big deals. I have 5 small incisions that are all healing nicely.. except for the belly button one. Which is taking a bit longer because of how moist the area stays. I was worried sick before, and now wonder what the big deal was about.
