Hi Jan, It would be so easy for people with diabetes to control their bg's (blood glucose) if we could all eat the same foods, but that isn't true. Until you can meet with a nutritionist or a diabetes educator, you may want to cut out starchy and high carb foods. If you eat bread, it should be whole wheat. There are some breads that have only 7 carbs per slice. Salads with some type of protein are good. What are some of the foods you have been eating and we can make suggestions. The best thing for controlling diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol is exercise. Walking is very good. You need to start out slow, walking even 5 or 10 minutes several times a day will help. If you have not been exercising, you may want to call your doctor and ask if it is okay to start. He knows your health situation. We can only make suggestions. Substitute hot green tea for part of the milk and diet sodas you are now drinking. Green tea has a lot of good health benefits and it will also help to curb your appetite, or it did for me. Are you testing yet? Milk causes higher numbers for some people. You may want to cut back on the amount of milk you drink until you find out how it affects your bg's. Until you see your doctor, do the best you can. Don't get overwhelmed or stressed with all the information. Just take it one day at a time. You can get control of your health problems, but it will take time. hugs Eunice
Guest guest
Hi everyone, I'm new to the group and was just diagnosed last week. I was put on 500mg Metaformin twice a day. I' don't go to the doctor until next month and am so unsure about what I should/shouldn't be eating. Making it worse, I also have high blood pressure and high cholesterol and am obese. Seems what it's ok to eat for one problem; it's not ok to eat for another. For years, I've drank about a gallon of water a day, only skim milk, only diet soda. I can't eat any form of fish or legumes!!! That's a problem all the way around. I wish there were lists of good foods and bad foods that I could compare all three problems and find the common foods. Any suggestions? Jan
Guest guest
Yes, I'm testing only in the morning right now. Usually between 115 and 125 after fasting. I think that's good. As far as what I eat, everything. I eat lots of fruits and vegies, which I know is good. But I also am a junk food addict, which is bad. Love my dairy, potatoes and rice. I don't like whole wheat, brown rice, it just won't go down, no matter how hard I try. I do fine during the day eating healthy food (probably too much though). But I always feel hungry so then I snack all evening. It seems without the breads/pastas I never feel full.

You'll get some very sound advice from the veterans in this group. It's been 3 weeks since my diagnosis and I feel I'm making some progress. Start walking...even if it's just around the house. I bought a pedometer so I could track my steps. The first couple of days I was amazed at how little I move. As far as what to eat...if you have a meter, it would help to start testing. You can learn (at least that's what I've been doing) from trial and error what affect your blood sugar. Are you scheduled for any diabetes education classes? I go to meet with an educator (finally) today. Stick around. Read some older posts. You can do this! Good luck to you, Sheila

Guest guest
Remember that fruits are usually very high in carbs, and some are much much larger than one serving (a 'single serving' size apple is much smaller than most of the apples at the grocery store...a serving is the size of the smallest apples you can find in a bag of apples). You may find as time passes on the medications that you feel less hungry (as the cells in your body actually are able to use the glucose in your blood for food!) Also, part of feeling satisfied after eating is psychological as well. If you are used to sitting and munching all night long, you will miss the activity of eating if you cut back on snacks etc. You may want to try finding an activity that will replace the activity of eating. Take a walk, go to the art store and buy some paints and take up painting... do things to keep yourself from thinking about food and eating. Sometimes having something to distract yourself from the food helps keep you from eating as much. Mike > > Yes, I'm testing only in the morning right now. Usually between 115 and > 125 after fasting. Hi Mike, Distracting myself from food is the reason I don't belong to any recipe groups. There are a couple of groups not related to diabetes that I belong to. When recipes are posted, most of the time I delete that message. I do have a lot of willpower when it comes to eating. I can eat one or two potato chips, a bite of pie, cake, etc and be satisfied. Reading recipes or about food in general does cause me to want to go to the kitchen and get a snack. Instead of thinking about food, I'd much rather be reading about herbs, aromatherapy, reading a good book, walking, planning different things I want to do to our house and my favorite, shopping. hugs Eunice - who eats to live, not live to eat

Guest guest
Hi, Just my 2 cents worth but I also went through what you are. I never felt full and gained a lot of weight before being diagnosed. If you give the meds a chance to work, you will feel full again. Also it helps to make a food and mood journal. That way you see if the cravings are due to boredom/depression, etc. I found I craved pasta when I was upset - I still love the carbs but am trying to be better at control. Good Luck, Vicki

Guest guest
Today I went to El Fenix (Tex-Mex food) with my husband for a late lunch. I had the most wonderful thing. All of their salads were laden with cheese, avocado, beans, etc., except something that was called a Combination Salad. It was just lettuce and tomato and purple cabbage. I asked them to put grilled chicken on it, and it was **wonderful**. I squeezed a bit of lemon juice on it at first, but I quickly found that I didn't need the lemon. That and iced tea was a perfect lunch for me. The chicken being grilled (fajita chicken) gave it a scrumptious flavor. Just sharing. What a joke. We had people forwarding recipes (as many as 10 at a time) from other groups. Recipes were being posted that were very high in carbs. Members were complaining.
