Guest guest
Hi To all those who have VEDS...Are there particular preventative tests that you have done on a regular basis? And if so what would they be. I have had an echo & an MRI (cardiac) in the last few months and they were both normal. Also one more question....I am a little confused about having different types of EDS... I thought if you had Type IV you couldn't have another. Am I wrong???? Thanks Betty
Guest guest
> I thought if you had Type IV you couldn't have another. Am I wrong???? If your mother has VEDS (type IV) then you have a 50% chance of inheriting VEDS. You can not inherit a different type of EDS than the type that your parent had. So, if mom has VEDS, you might inherit VEDS, but you won't get a different type. The same type carries through from one generation to another. Now, what if your mom has VEDS, but your father has another type of EDS, HEDS (type III)? You would have a 50% chance of inheriting either type from your parents. The odds are as follows: 25% - No EDS 25% - VEDS from mom only 25% - HEDS from dad only 25% - Both VEDS from mom and HEDS from dad In the above example, I used only dominant types of EDS. It gets more complicated for recessive types, but I can explain that if you wish. Another possible explanation for people who appear to have multiple types is the variability of symptoms in EDS. While a person may have one type of EDS, that does not mean that they might not also experience symptoms typically associated with another type of EDS. People with VEDS may have more hypermobility and people with HEDS may experience vascular complications. Many people with EDS use the term " overlay " to indicate that they have a particular type of EDS but experience symptoms or tendencies of another type. It does not mean that they have two types of EDS, but rather it serves as an explanation of the variability of their symptoms. Hope this helps. -Barb
Guest guest
Barb Thanks ...I think it does. This genetic thing is very confusing. Guest guest
An MRA might be something else to follow up on as it might offer more detail. Jill
Guest guest
A magnetic resonance angiogram.....more sensitive then a regular MRI and is used to show vasculature with more detail. Jill What is an MRA? robin
