Guest guest
I don't like the sound of this. Quite disturbing. Is this rare? I'm thinking it could happen if you cough or burp up acid, then inhale it. Or is there another way you could get pneumonia from reflux? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Anytime you get a significant amount of foreign substance (food, liquid, gastric contents) into the lungs, you get aspiration pneumonia as opposed to bacterial or viral pneumonia. Unfortunately due to our lax tissues in the esophagus, the automatic response to reflux, which over time can decrease in ability to protect our airway, is not good. One thing the speakers at the seminar recommended was to have a GI consult, an endoscopic exam to make sure there is no damage to the esophageal tissues, and possibly a pH probe test. Mylanta helps as it coats the esophagus and helps neutralize the acid in the stomach. ANother trick is to chew gum to increase saliva production, swallowing and ultimately helps bathe the esophagus. The instructor said that the stomach acids have TWO purposes, one, to break up the food, and two, to kill any bacteria/bugs we ingest with our food. How true this is.... My hubby and I were at a wedding reception 21 years ago and the entree was chicken. I was experiencing problems with my ulcer flaring up, was on medications for it and probably on an antibiotic too at the time. Everyone that we knew who went to the wedding got food poisoning, even Ray. I didn't because of the meds I was on and probably the antibiotics.... Guest guest
hum....... Your experience at the wedding reception sounds like what happened at my grandma's funeral. The ladies from my aunt's church did a luncheon for us after the funeral. The next day people started getting sick. I got sick 2 days after. Vomiting, diarreah, etc. Everyone there got sick except for my aunt. She swears to this day that it must have been a virus cause she didn't get sick, but I'm sure it was food poisoning. I think she was upset because she made the macaroni and cheese. Maybe she was worried it was that. I actually think it was the cut up fruit that I bought at costco. Maybe she was taking some meds that I don't know about. Maybe she has acid reflux, or an ulcer. Interesting.
