Guest guest
Can someone enlighten me about clonidine? I was given it for flushing, but the patient insert says that it relaxes and dilates the blood vessels. Won't this cause more redness? Don't we want to constrict the vessels? Does this work for flushing? Thanks for your help. JE
Guest guest
Hi JE, I've been taking clonidine for severe flushing for several years, and it does help to reduce my flushing somewhat. It may help you if you have nerve-mediated or hormonal flushing. It is an anti-hypertensive that works in the brain to stimulate certain nerve endings (alpha receptors), decreasing sympathetic nerve output from the central nervous system . It lowers blood pressure by relaxing certain vessels in the body. You've probably been given a low starting dose that would have minimal effect on your blood pressure if your bp is normal, but of course it affects everyone differently. Good luck!
