Barbara,

I've been thinking about your driving eval.. can they put it off until your meds are worked out? Seems a bit unfair to have to do that while in the turmoil of med changes. I understand their desire for it, but having that serious of a decision made while undergoing med changes seems like a disadvantage. It is, obviously, not your "normal" state, which is how they should test your driving abilities under.

Tell them I said so, that should work! LOL

I hope the change from Ritalin works out.

Hugs,

JO

Welcome back Barbara,

I went searching and found out that the methadone that they give the addicts is actually methadone HCL and that it gets dispensed to them, they don't get a prescription. I am on 30 mg 3 times a day and that may get increased on Wednesday when I go to the doctor and fill out my little pain journal thing. I have it written down now I will put it on their form.

So good luck with all the med changes it is a lot of fun.

take care,

Lin

Re the discussion on Methadone..............................

All of this is pretty confusing to me. Just this past Thursday, my doc switched me from DIlaudid to Methadone. The reason? Despite heavy duty efforts, we could not get get the Dialudid increased to more than 8mg four times a day without my being majorly dead and drowsy (even with his having added in Ritalin to counteract the drowsiness and difficulties with remaining alert AND with adding in the Meclazine to counter the balance issues that came from a vestibular side effect to the Dialudid).

Lin - He increased the Methadone this morning as expected and switched the Ritalin to Adderall. I see him again next Monday and he plans to increase the Methadone again at that point. The change from the Ritalin to the Adderall is difficult to explain....He originally prescribed the Ritalin to offset the drowsiness and lack of focus that comes with narcotic use. With the Rtialin, however, it felt like it was competing with the narcotic rather than evening things out. We're hoping that the Adderall works better for me. We shall see. Just hoping that all of this medication roulette won't have an adverse effect on my being able to pass the driving evaluation that is scheduled for Wednesday (day after tomorrow). Quite nervous about passing it since a whole lot rests on it. Barbara wrote:

Barbara,

I hope all the changes in your meds work out to really helping you in the end..but right now to have a driving exam is really not fair to you since they just changed your meds so recently. Is there any way to postpone it until your meds are finally at the doses that are going to help and not impede your driving? If there is a way I am sure you will find it...and if not I hope you pass with flying colors. Good luck..Hugs..Ginny

ly, Jo, I'm not sure how any of all of this will work out. In talking with the doc today, I was at least able to get the information that the place that is doing the eval, even if I do fail the exam, will not yank my license on the spot. Unless I was too unsafe to drive home, they will forward the results to the doc that I saw this morning. The other thing that they may do is to request an addition "on the road" eval that same day. In turn, while the doc will not let me drive until things have been satisfactorily and totally worked out, he will work with me to adjust what needs to be adjusted. He said that he would not notify the registry until we had exhausted all of our options (although, again, I wouldn't be given the okay to drive in the meanwhile). While I'm terribly anxious, I think that he is as invested in getting me into top shape as I am and that he and the other docs there are trying to give me a fair shake. I'm hoping

for the best but at least know that if things don't work out in my favor, my doc will do his best to get things going in the right direction. I'll keep you posted. Barbarajomal1@... wrote:

Barb,

I wish you luck on your driving test on Wednesday! I know you will do well. I was also just increased on my methadone and that is the one pain med that does not effect me that bad mentally so I hope it is the same for you. I wish you the best with all your new meds and driving test. Hope that you have been feeling better! I just started feeling a little bit better yesterday and feel pretty decent this morning! I hope it lasts and I go back to the neurologist tomorrow for my EMG so please wish me luck! Take Care and know that I am thinking of you and will send a prayer your way!

LOL and Best Wishes Always!!!

Barbara: Hi! I was just reading your posts on switching from Ritalin to Adderall(sp?) I too have been switched from Ritalin to Adderall and I have been on this new drug for now over 3 or 4 months. It has really worked out for me, the Adderall that is. Of course, Ritalin was good also. I just couldn't function very well without something like this to keep me going. I swear by this drug, it has helped me alot!!!!! I hope it does the same for you. I am wondering are they not giving you your license because of all the drugs? I mean who wants to be on all of these drugs, I know I don't want to, but have no choice in the matter. I can't function without them, god I sound like a drug addict. But I know deep down I am not. I just can't walk without the meds, or anything else for that matter. lol ha! I hope you have a pain-free day and night. Janet U.dawn lorenz wrote:

Despite heavy duty efforts, we could not get get the Dialudid increased to more than 8mg four times a day without my being majorly dead and drowsy (even with his having added in Ritalin to counteract the drowsiness and difficulties with remaining alert AND with adding in the Meclazine to counter the balance issues that came from a vestibular side effect to the Dialudid).

Welcome back Barbara,

I went searching and found out that the methadone that they give the addicts is actually methadone HCL and that it gets dispensed to them, they don't get a prescription. I am on 30 mg 3 times a day and that may get increased on Wednesday when I go to the doctor and fill out my little pain journal thing. I have it written down now I will put it on their form.

So good luck with all the med changes it is a lot of fun.

Janet - The doctor's request for a driving asessment originally stemmed from the fact that I met with a doc (Dr.WorriedAboutCoveringMyAssMoreThanIWorryAbout My Patients) who was standing in for my own doc. At the time, I was not even on narcotics...this jerk of a doc was basing his "concern" solely on the reduced function in my left arm and hand. Unfortunately, now that I am on narcotics, my functioning is even more compromised. I think there is a rather high likelihood that, between the physical impairment and the side effects from all of these new meds, I will fail at least one portion of the test.

When I met with my doc yesterday, he told me that the registry would not get a copy of the eval. However, I just got off the phone with the rehab where I'm having it done and they stated clearly that they do send a copy to the registry. We have already postponed the eval once because of how messed up I was from simultaneously having to go off the old meds and starting on the narcotics and the psychostimulant. It's a long story, but things are even crzier now because both the narcotic and the psychostimulant had to be changed again. ( I just couldn't get up to the dose of the Dilaudid that they wanted me on.) So on top of just having started on the Methadone last Thursday, the methadone was increased again yesterday and the ritalin was stopped and adderall was started. My health insurance doesn't cover the cost of the eval ($350). I can't cancel the eval and, as it turns out, if I fail I will

have to pay out of pocket each and every time they try to re-do the driving assessment....plus if I can't drive then I can't go to work (although I'm not at the point of being able to return to work yet anyway).

I'm not someone typically given to depression, but I have to say that this is one slam too many for me. I'm just going to keep trying to take things as they come, but it sure is getting hard.

I'm just starting on the Adderall (20mg at 8AM and noon) and he may keep increasing it. If I need to have an evening dose (and I might since I couldn't keep my eyes open last evening) the doc has written on the bottle that the third dose is an option if I speak with him. They're continuing to increase the Methadone also.....Now on 15mg at 8AM, 10mg at noon, and 5mg at 4PM. I see him again this coming Monday and he made it clear yesterday that he plans to increase it again when we meet. God, will I ever be like me again? Who would ever want to take these meds for "fun?"

I'm surprised considering all of the meds that so many take that no one else here, at least not that I've heard, has been faced with this driving thing. At the risk of sounding like a whining baby, I'm beginning to feel like I have a target on my back. Okay, enough venting for now. Gonna try to take a nap.Janet Underwood wrote:
