Guest guest
Hi Trisha. All things being equal, in the hands of an experienced orthotist, you can get just as good results from either band. They are both acive bands whic means they rely on VERY gentle pressure on the prominent parts of the head to redirect growth to the flat arts of the head. The things to consider, though, are these. STARbands are made by Orthomerica and are handled by orthotists who handle many different types of orthotic devices. DOCbands are made by Cranial Technologies and the orthotists for cranial tech handle only the DOCband. So with a STARband orthotist, you MUST make sure you ask a lot of questions about their experience. You need to make sure they know what they are doing and have done a lot of successful STARband treatments. With Cranial tech you are assured an orthotist who has had special training specifically in treatment with a docband. We have had many many success stories from both types. I am sure many parents will chime in with their stories. Whatever you decide, make it an educated decision. There are many many links and files here to help you make your decision. Please let us know what you decide. Guest guest
There is a really good chart comparing the two in the files section of this group as well. It is called Comparison Chart and it is near the bottom. Guest guest
what ppl tend to say is it is more the orthotists than the band itself, so it would depend on the orthotists experience, etc. Have you checked the database to see if the location you are going to is listed in there with someone having used them you can contact? I did that to find out about our local Hanger office. I also searched the archives for ppl in my area and I was able to find 2 ppl that used our local orthotist to talk to. Also the cappskids.org has a list of suggested questions to ask yoru orthotist, it is listed below the questions to ask the doctor on the same page. We asked our orthotist a lot of those questions and determined she was fairly experienced but then we also went in for an evaluation to talk to her and see what she said about our son and it was after that that we realised it wasn't a good fit for us. We have been to the Charlotte CT office as well and that is where he will be treated. I will be calling to schedule his cast this week. I assume that is the office you are talking about but not sure where in GA you live. Also I have seen the files here about STAR bands not fitting right, I don't want to waste any time trying to get a good fit, I want it to fit great the first time. It seems like the laser scanning doesn't match up with the laser cutting out the helmet. I feel like it would be best to do the molding. But I live in Georgia so the closest clinic for the DOC band would be North Carolina. So that would be a lot of traveling or I would have to rent an apartment for the time that she wears the band and have to leave my husband and family for that time. Could you all give me your input on what you think I should do? And what your opinions are of the differences in the STAR vs DOC bands? Guest guest
Alisha, We actually drove 7 hours each way to the closest DOC Clinic and are so grateful we did it. You can also look into angelflight or nwacares programs which will fly you for free for medical treatment. There is another company listed on the CT website at the bottom. Just curious what were her measurements? my daughter was cranial vault 19mm and CI 93. - Mom to Madison DOC Band 3/30/07-7/13/07Alisha <alishaparr@...> wrote: is is already scheduled to get the STAR band but over the last few days I have been comparing pictures from the STAR and the DOC and I notice that the DOC produces much better results. is plagio. is one of the more severe cases, im actually surprised the Dr.s havn't told us that she needs surgery. Guest guest
we had a very experienced ortho and very good results with a starband. I think the person using the band is more important than the type of band. There are some ill fitting starbands, but sometimes there are problems with docbands too. However it is really important that you are comfortable with the treatment, so if you feel better going with CT then I think that is probably the best choice for you. In terms of the differences, docbands are slightly lighter and cover less of the head. CT does only banding so their staff is generally very well trained. the ortho who uses a starband may or may not specialize in banding. both products are effective in the right hands. Guest guest
yes in talking about the one in NC I am from north Georgia so it would be better to go up there then down to Florida. Guest guest
I would be more concerned with the experience of your ortho than the brand of the band. My son has a STARband and has seen great correction in the six weeks that he has been wearing it. We did not have any problems with the fit. The only adjustment that was made when he first received the band was to accomodate the growth that he had since he was scanned. There are people who have had problems with the fit of the Doc band so I would not say that if you decide to go with a Doc band, that the fit is going to be right the first time. With both brands it depends on the person doing the scanning/casting and the growth your daughter has between the scan/cast and actually recieving the band. HTH! Guest guest
how long of a drive is it? the FL one is jacksonville right? It only takes us about 4-5 hrs to get to jacksonville so I am assuming the drive would be similiar for you so NC is shorter than that? I know some ppl on here have had to drive 7+ hrs or fly to go with CT but they may not have had a good local orthotist. Or for us we are lucky Charlotte CT is only 1.5 hrs if no traffic (took us 2.25 hrs last time) but the local orthotist couldnt help us b/c of his case being atypical. have you interviewed the local orthotist?
