Guest guest
It looks like your babies have Brachycephaly. Shane has gone from 96% down to 94%, still in the severe range; Sierra has gone from 88% down to 86%, from severe down to moderate. So they are both making progress! Great job in one month! Guest guest
This is very interesting! Hanger gave me a folder with a band care sheet on one side and a measurement sheet and copies of her scans on the other. I thought this was the standard. It has all her starting measurements and then everytime we scan I put in the #'s here at home. My ortho actually emails me the files of her scan and her numbers that he figured out. If you want I can email you what it looks like then maybe you can print it and take it in to your ortho and ask for the same??? The ortho is doing the measurements in the computer everytime you scan - it's no big deal for them to give you a copy. JEN Mommy to 4...and 1 more!!!! Guest guest
Hi Jen I go to Hanger in Farmingdale, NY. My son was fitted with his helmet on 8/9. The orthotist there does seem very knowledgable but when I ask him for my son's measurments he acts like I have 2 heads. I was finally able to get him to give me that my sons ears were 8mm off which on the last adj. are now down to 6mm. All he ever says is that he has improved alot since he started. I would really like to know measurements. Do you think this is too much to ask? Or is it maybe extra work for him to figure out? I see everyone talking about measurements on this group and I have nothing to go by. I know I should just go by looking at his head but he also has asymmetry which I think he may wear the helmet for longer then for the flatness. I was just wondering since your dd has the same helmet did Hanger give you a measurement sheet when she first got fitted or did you have to ask and pester them for it? Thanks! Guest guest
Yes, I also go to the one in Farmingdale and when I asked for the measurements he kind of looks at me the same way and I can't really understand the measurement sheet he gave me! He says they have plagio, but the cm don't make sense to me. Shouldn't he be measuring mm's? What should I do to get him to give me the plagio mm measurements. I sometimes feel like I have to force him to explain the measurements in ENGLISH!!! Sierra Head shot (top 2) Shane head shot (Bottom 2) both flat on right side Carmen J. Guest guest
Hi Carmen I go back next week for our 4th adj. and I am going to bring the sheet that Jen forwarded to me and see if I can get something from him. Maybe if I show him something that another Hanger office provided to their patients with the same cond. he will surrender the measurements!! When were your children fitted for their helmets? THey are adorable!! Did you have more then 1 scan at Hanger or just the 1st initial one? I was told that he would not do another scan until he is done wearing the helmet but I think I may ask Tony if he will do another scan maybe not at the next visit but maybe the 1 after that since by then my son will be in his helmet for 9 weeks so we can see if there has been any change. If I were you I would do the same, (just a suggestion!) but maybe if enough of us bug him for it maybe he will start giving out the measurements and doing more scans. Let me know how everything works out! Guest guest
Hi All: Well I took it upon myself to become extremely proactive and ask for more specific information on my twins conditions and I emailed the ortho. This was his response: Shane has Plagiocephaly, with a Brachycephaly component as noted on the measurement sheet (Cephalic index of 96%). Sierra has plagiocephaly and just falls into the zone of Brachycephaly (cephalic index of 88%). I categorized children based on my own criteria. It takes into account starting age, viewed severity, initial skull circumference and measurements.Measurements vary from practitioner to practitioner. I measure in cm. To convert to mm move the decimal one place to the right.I do not routinely measure the skull based deformity as the cranial bands do not act directly on them. They are a by product of wearing the band. If you would like these measurements at the end of treatment I would be happy to record them, I take these measurements at treatment initiation to record a starting point and documentation of the condition.I have included an attachment of the top view from their scans.I will do an interm scan at 2-3 months if desired or if I see a significant change in head shape in a short period. I can certainly scan a child anytime a parent wishes. I do not scan at each visit, there is no point. Measurements are recorded at each office visit to track progress. I hope this helps and any other questions you may have do not hesitate to call me.A hundred years from now it will not matter how much money you had the sort of house you lived in or the kind of car you drove, but the world may be different because you were important in the life of a child. So I have a few more questions: What is Plagio with Brachy component? Is it possible to have both? How do you calculate cephalic index? Is our ultimate goal 0%? Thanks! Guest guest
Hi Carmen, that is a nice reply from him. It is common to have both. plagio is the asymmetry (difference between the two sides) and brachy means there is general flatness in the back. in other words they are flat on one side and in the back. the helmet can correct for both. my daughter has mainly brachy but mild plagio. If it was just the plagio she wouldn't wear a band (just 4 mm asymmetry). A normal baby has a cephalic index of around 78. Your babies probably won't go to the normal range. You might expect around 10% correction (96->86) or so. but their heads should get a lot rounder and more even. (the child starbing at 88 should do better). He hasn't given you any measurements to tell how severe the plagio is. I'm not sure if you attached the scan. If you want to email it to me directly I can let you know anything else I can tell from that. My email is christineashok (take the spaces out). take care. -christine mom to sydney/ 8.5 mo/ starband 5-31-06 > > Hi All: > Well I took it upon myself to become extremely proactive and ask for more > specific information on my twins conditions and I emailed the ortho. Guest guest
I am not sure what you meant by this, but how do you know they won't go to the "normal" range? My son is now in the 96% and my daughter is in the 86% cephalic index. "A normal baby has a cephalic index of around 78. Your babies probablywon't go to the normal range. Guest guest
Not trying to answer for , but just a reminder that numbers are very subjective. Your goal will probably be for your children's heads to look "normal." With the measurements you gave, a helmet should certainly do that. Brachycephaly (involves the cephalic index), however, is harder to treat than plagio. The ending number may never be what is quoted as in the ideal range, but it will still APPEAR much better and look "normal." My daughter's cephalic index is 97.1% After the helmet, I don't believe she will be 78% - or even in the so-called ideal range. My goal is sginificant improvement - I think her head will always be wider - not enough to be teased about or to feel bad about, though. cutiecee@... wrote: I am not sure what you meant by this, but how do you know they won't go to the "normal" range?
