Guest guest
Undetected Pancreatis (sp?) was another one I think? And the heart fatality was from prolonged QT syndrome, but the child had a long period of v high BHBs and yes, I think was on concurrent AEDs. 's cardiac problems that were picked up in late 2002 were when his ketones were v high, and when he was on 3 meds (including my friend not - a high dose benzo..). He had always had ventricular ectopics, prior to starting keto, but the echo in 2002 showed he had also developed atrial ectopics (so from a different chamber) and reduced ventricular function. So began our journey into the cardiac world alongside the neuro appts..... Anyways - The echo he had done 2 weeks ago showed he no longer has the ventricular dysfunction, and no ectopics were picked up in the brief ECG in the clinic. However, he then had a 24 hr ECG holter monitoring him at home here, and I don't yet have the results. My pick is that he will still have them, but a lot less in number, as any ECG strip previously, like even for 25 secs used to pick them up. Sooooo.....my biased conclusion is - high ketones in conjunction with a med cocktail is the one to watch for, in all areas, including liver and heart. The checking for cardiac abnormalities, especially prolonged QT syndrome, is something I believe that should be set out in any diet protocol - the paper outlining the fatal case and potential cardiac complications is in the files section, ----- Original Message ----- From: Bill Barber Even the common side effects can be fatal if not addressed promptly; diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, dehydration, etc. For the less common ones, they range from liver failure to kidney stones, to heart problems. I don't have my old files here right now, but I can vaguely recollect problems with liver especially. Some of the patients were on concurrent regimes of one or more medications, so this can also be a hazard when going on the diet. These were articles from medical journals. Perhaps a computerized search would be able to locate them? Some of the children are very young and some are also considered medically fragile and some are unable to communicate distress. Even the difficulties of insufficient vitamins and minerals and possible effects of bone loss and high cholesterol can be serious in the long term. And for many of us, the diet is long term.
