Guest guest
Does anyone have experience with Plagiocephaly going away on its own? My 15 week old daugher has torticollis and plagiocephaly and the physical therapist is saying she needs a DOC band but the pediatrician is saying lets revisit the issue when she is 6 months old and won't approve. Isn't it better to fix it early? Can the head fix itself once they start sitting up? It doesn't seem possible. Thanks for all your help!!! Guest guest
The younger the better but if you do have to wait till 6 months that is still a good age. But of course the younger the better. Guest guest
Hello and welcome to this group. The story about plagio fixing it'self is a myth. The proof for that is that this group has over 6000 members. Like said, the younger you start the better. I would see if you can't find a new ped that will take care of things. Guest guest
If you doubt your pedi, either get a second opinion or find a CT (if one is nearby), most (if not all) will do a consultation for free. Then you can educate your pedi. Guest guest
HI and welcome to the group. As you have already been told, plagio does not go away on its own. It does take some sort of intervention whether that be a band/helmet or aggressive repositioning. Depending on the severity of your child's flatness, she is still young enough to start repositioning to get her head rounded. Even if you are intending to band your dd, repo is a good idea for the time it takes to get thru the apps and the casting/fitting process. There is a wealth of information on repo in our files section under Repositioning Headquarters. Ideally you want to keep you child off her flatspot as much as possible. Change her position in the crib, use things to prop her up onto the rounded side so she doesn't rest on the flat spot. Try not to use the swing or bouncy seat. There is a great chair called a Bumbo that you can get at Target or online at www.bumboseat.com. Please let me know if you would like m ore info on repositioning. I repo'ed my dd's fairly mild plagio and now 2 rs later I can hardly tell she was ever flat. As far as your pede, if you are unhappy with him/her, I would suggest getting a second opinion or swithing pede's altogether. A mother has to be able to trust the things her pede tells her and if you don't then you need a new one. Guest guest
Hi! I am a relatively new to this group and I am here to tell you that no, it does not fix itself after they start to sit up. My pediatrician also kept putting me off and now I am just getting my Starband and Genevieve is 10 months old, which is on the late side. Genevieve crept early and crawled early and was never laying on her head (while awake) from about 5 months on and her head is still flat enough for Blue Cross's " medically necessary " cut off. I did change pediatricians and I am still really angry at my first pediatrician. She sticks by her opinion that she made no mistakes, and if she had at least sent me to a physical therapist at 10 weeks when I first pointed out the flattening, Genevieve might have avoided the helmet. You are lucky you are looking into things now! If I were you I would have your baby looked at by a specialist and have her measured. Many of the suppliers of the helmets will measure a baby without charging! (At least the people at Stellar in Pasadena CA are great and will measure). That way you can see how bad things are. Then you could try repositioning for a month (this is easier when the baby is younger because they actually stay still at night when they sleep.) Then remeasure and see if there has been any change. But if there is no improvement, then I would go ahead and make appointments to get started. In LA at least, the helmet makers and the specialists all seem to be pretty booked up. They saw us quickly only because my pediatrician had put us off for months and we ended up getting started when Genevieve was 9 months old - which is late. That is the last time I will let a doctor put me off my instincts. Good luck!! . > > > > Does anyone have experience with Plagiocephaly going away on its > own? > > My 15 week old daugher has torticollis and plagiocephaly and the > > physical therapist is saying she needs a DOC band but the > pediatrician > > is saying lets revisit the issue when she is 6 months old and won't > > approve. Guest guest
But is it too late to start with strictly repositioning? Our daughter seems so active to unless she is sleeping it is difficult to keep her off that side. We try to do a lot of tummy time. I hate to put her in the helmet if I can correct it on my own with things like repositioning but I also don't wan to wait until it's too late. Guest guest
Almost 4 months is not too late to start with repositioning. I started m dd's repo at 3.5 months and our other repo mid, Christie, started her dd's repo at 5 or 5.5 months and we both had great success. This is a good time to start because you have a little time to ry the repo and look for progress but you can set a re- evaluation date that is still early enough that you can get your dd banded if that's what you want to do. That's great that she is getting more active, but i am sure she still spends more time than you think resting on the flat of her head. Do you still cradle her or hold her at all whiule she is feeling? What about naps? There are still plenty of opportunities for repo. Please check out the Photos section under Before and After Pictures/Repositioned and look for picures of " S. " (my dd) and " Remy " (Christie's dd) and you can see the progress that was made with repo. Guest guest
I cannot really answer your question but I will say that if your daughter sleeps for a good long period at night, and you reposition at night, it should start to correct. My specialist gave me research that indicated repositioning can be as effective as the helmet. However, if your daughter is flat to one side, you should not put her on a memory foam. This will not exert the pressure needed on the non-flat side to even things out. Position her with wedges or, as my specialist advised, rice filled pantyhose or knee-highs. Keep the non- flat side down to the mattress, stick the rice-filled pantyhose wedged under the flat side so she is slightly leaning away from the flat side. Also, it helps to get some of these items under the flat-side shoulder as well. Lots of tummy time of just plain carrying her around during the day will keep her off her head. I know that carrying a child around can be very tiring, but get yourself a baby bjorn and just wear her around. It is true that her neck may get tired, but they develop so quickly and their muscles adapt so quickly that she will be strong enough in no time. Good luck! You can do it!! . > > > > > > > > Does anyone have experience with Plagiocephaly going away on > its > > > own? > > > > My 15 week old daugher has torticollis and plagiocephaly and > the > > > > physical therapist is saying she needs a DOC band but the > > > pediatrician > > > > is saying lets revisit the issue when she is 6 months old and > won't > > > > approve.
