COPC & Becker Helmet-Kentucky

I talked to the orhto this morning and found out that Wyatt has the

Becker helmet. This is why the doctor said it was a different

helmet than what he had been using-and different than other children

I had seen in his office and in copc office. The other helmet was

the COPC helmet, but they are no longer using it. The ortho says

that this Becker helmet is a " passive helmet " and does not use

active pressure to change the shape of the head. I do know it is

FDA approved. Anyway, the orthos are new to this whole helmet thing

because the one guy that has been doing it for years just retired

late last year. I expressed my concern about the lack of

measurements and photos to follow up and he is willing to work with

me to monitor with photos and measurements...duh! They do have

digital pics that they took the day of the casting and

measurements. (I have also started my own picture file to compare

and I will take new pics every couple of weeks)

He was very receptive of my frustrations and I told him I had done

my homework late (after we got the helmet) and that I was concerned

because I had only received negative feedback about COPC in

Louisville/New Albany, IN. I feel a little better...my son is doing

great so far, we are really seeing good results, but I just plan to

watch him like a hawk and I'll surely act fast if I start seeing

unfavorable results.

Anyway, does anyone have any experience with the Becker helmet that

they can share?

Thanks,

Louisville, KY

We have had others use the Becker helmet (they were in Michigan but

I don't see anyone listed in the database). Here are some old post

numbers about it ...

I thought it was active based on the FDA filing of being

substantially equivalent to the Doc Band (BTW a lot of the bands on

the market used this analysis to gain their FDA approval). However,

I have heard of some orthos taking active bands and " shaving " them a

bit more on the inside and thus making them passive. If it is

passive you most likely will not see results as quickly as you would

with an active band. At his age and with a passive band I would

expect you to see a noticable change in 3-4 weeks. However, if I

remember correctly there really are no other options in KY. You

would have to go to OH or IL.

I think your approach is very good. Keep a watchful eye. Did the

orthos go to the optional training at the Becker Facilities in

Michigan? Taking pictures every couple of weeks is great. Try and

get the same angles every time. Watch for signs of a poor fit -

unfading redspots and lots of shifting (more than 1 " in any

direction, preferably less than 1/2 " ).

How often will they see him for an adjustment? I'm assuming with a

passive design it would be every 3-4 weeks or so. An active design

would be every 1-2 weeks at his age.

keep us posted.

Hi ,

It sounds like you are doing the right things to ensure your baby has

a good experience, or at least to catch a problem early if the ortho's

experience turns out to be an issue. Please let us know how it goes.
