Guest guest
The mmpi (Minnesota Multi-Phasic Inventory) question is one I faced here -- the state of Texas wanted my pain doctor -- head of the cancer clinic at St. Luke's, one of the world's best -- to be " checked " by having all his patients pay several hundred dollars each to a psychologist, so that we could be tested and " prove " we weren't addicted. Trouble is, none of the psychiatrists OR psychologists I talked to accept that such a thing is possible. In my case, the state's doc finally went through my history, noticed that I had twice backed away from higher doses of methadone. He felt this proved I didn't have an addiction problem, or I wouldn't have done so. I still don't know what I would have done, because to me and the doctors I've talked to, addiction is diagnosed AFTER behavior, not as a potential. I don't see why I should have to prove I have what is essentially a birth defect everytime I turn around. After the tenth time or so, you begin to feel EVERYone's trying to get you, and you get very defensive. Well, I did at least...

Guest guest
Hi mark; Yes I remember you dealing with something similar there. I have always backed away from meds for the years of being mistreated with them by psychcholgoists who prescribed them incorrectly in the past. Of course the would never say that; they just either say the patient is non compliant or up the dose and make it worse and worse. This is what is usually seen in ptsd without underlying psych disorders. Now I just tell them I want no medication and see how they react. I feel the same way as you: except now I feel like I have to prove both the ptsd and the EDS and just hope that they can wrap their heads around one or the other; though perferably both. This is the first time I have tried to go back and get help after recoiling from my last attempt. It has a name: revictimization. It has taken over a year to brush myself off this time; to even ask for something as minor as checking my lipitor dosage. I also suspect that insurance plays a huge part. I may be wrong but it seems the people who aren't called crazy; have the terrific plans and are getting surgeries and the help.
