Guest guest
Just saw a brochure in our local paper advertising a walk-a-thon type of thing in my area. Its purpose is to raise awareness and educate about diabetes and to raise money for the ADA's efforts at researching a cure. I was curious about the groups opinions about the value of participating and supporting the ADA in this manner? Fred
Guest guest
Are you sure it's an ADA fundraiser? Because right now the JDRF is also having walks for diabetes research and they're a great group to support. (JDRF stands for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation; they're majorly involved in research for cure of diabetes and Good Guys!) I'd walk for the JDRF any way but no way for the ADA. Guest guest
Walking is good exercise, so there can't be any reason to poo poo it for that reason. Is this a thing where you get sponsers? I used to do that for some cause or other in my teens. I say support the ADA. They do some good things like fund research and education, even if their diet suggestions may not be all that useful. > Just saw a brochure in our local paper advertising a walk-a-thon type > of thing in my area. Guest guest
Might I suggest that instead of funding the fatcats at ADA with your contributions, you instead pick out a promising research program and donate directly? That's the approach I take. One could do worse than contribute to a program at Joslin. I do all of my charitable giving and work as close as possible to the end recipient. That might mean buying groceries for someone down on their luck (and NOT giving them beer and cig money!!!) or sending a check to a medical research center.
