i feel so foolish for asking this, but what exactly is

seb derm? is it your skin being oily, or dry and

flakey? previous to today i thought it was the latter,

but i have read a few more posts and now i am

confused!

ever since beginning the metrolotion, my forehead and,

tzone and sides of my nose have been plagued with oil

like i have never seen. of course, then other parts of

my skin are dry. just wondering if i should have been

reading all the posts on se derm this whole time! ;)

Seborrheic dermatitis is characterized by

flakiness and redness typically around the nose,

eyebrows, hairline, ears, and on the scalp. It

is not dry skin although it can appear that way.

It is associated with oiliness and that is why it

occurs around the nose area. Some research

suggests there may be a fungal connection.

Anyone that has this condition knows how

difficult it can be to treat it. We don't want

to use steroids, but that is the only treatment

out there that doctors say are useful (until I

read how some of you are getting tacrolimus for

it now). If someone uses steroids a lot, then

they can get steroid-induced rosacea where you

have constant redness in certain areas of the

face. That is probably why we see so many people

in this e-mail group that have both conditions.

They are associated.

We almost need a separate e-mail support

group for this condition, but I don't know how

you go about starting one. I think it would be

great for so many people, especially those that

are also being refused the prescription for

tacrolimus (dr.'s saying it won't help sd) and

here I learn that some people are taking it and

getting great results. That is the medical

establishment again! I get very upset with them

sometimes as many of us have seen dr. after dr.

with little to no improvement over many years.

I highly recommend that the seb derm sufferers look at

two homepathic treatment creams... the first is

Florasone, a natural concoction that works like a

steroid, but is safe for the face. I can't say enough

good stuff about Florasone...

....and there's a another for psoriasis, psoriaflora,

that says it relieves redness, flaking, etc. That one

might be worth a try for folks not having luck with

anything else. Look for them at Whole Foods, or a

similar venue.
