Guest guest
Hi everyone -- I've just been diagnoses and started on NovoLog insulin about 10 days ago. I'm post gastric-bypass of 10 years, with a revision last year due to MAJOR nutritional deficiencies (Beriberi (no B vitamins) with heart failure and peripheral neuropathy), hyperparathyroidism, iron deficiency anemia, B-12 anemia, etc , etc. and now Diabetes and Kidney Failure. Because of my surgery, I can only eat small amounts of food at a time; my " diet " post bypass is to get 100-150 grams of protein a day, and a few carbs if I still have room in my little stomach to handle them. So, imagine my surprise when I have a random blood sugar in the 200's...after testing for a couple of weeks, I was sent to an Endocrinologist who definately says I am diabetic. She then sent me to a diabetic education and dietician...neither really knew what to do with me nutritionally. I have severe reactive hypoglycemia. So, they told me to eat 6 times a day... 1-2 carbs and 1-2 proteins each time. My blood sugars were immediatley spiking into the 200's and low 300's within 1-2 hours of eating. My doctor then put me on NovoLog with instructions to test, and if under 140, inject a unit of NovoLog for every 15 gms of carb I was going to eat.... And to make sure I ate within 15 minutes. The first week, I continued to spike into the high 200's with just 1- 2 carbs. My vision gets blurry, I get really thirsty, and i feel horrible. If I ate 2 or more proteins, the spikes were less. So, then my doctor told me to wait 30 minutes before eating, and not to test for at least 2 hours after eating. My question... if I'm spiking the first 2 hours, isn't it important to know this, or is it ok to go into the 200's as long as it's back down to a normal range within 2 hours? Also -- I have to be up 18 hours a day to stick to this regimen!!! Thank you for your help....Carol
