Guest guest
I agree... we live in S. Florida and haven't seen any helmet babies out in public other than the Dr's office (although a friend of mine tells me she's seen some at the mall now and then). I always appreciate it when someone comes up to me to say that their son/daughter/niece/nephew (or whatever) had a helmet and that they are growing up fine and doing well. I also appreciate it when someone asks why my daughter has the helmet, rather than just giving us strange looks. I'm always sure to answer politely and tell them that she's a very healthy and normal 10 month old. Once she's done with her helmet I know I'll be sure to approach any other parents of helmet babies (or those without helmets who have particularly flat heads!) that we see in public and share our experience with them. The one important thing is to know that you aren't alone!Alison mom to Leila, born 9/25/06 (tort/plagio, STARband 6/5/06)Boynton Beach, FL Plagiocephaly From: christineashok@...Date: Mon, 24 Jul 2006 18:56:36 +0000Subject: Re: Plagio Helmet kids in Public? Hi ,I live all the way across the country, so you won't see me with myhelmeted baby, but I have the same question :-) We saw tons of babiesthis weekend. It was really hot so we spent time at the mall and wentto Golden Gate Park (we don't have A/C).When I'm online I feel like lots of babies have this problem, but Ihave never seen another baby (besides ours) with a band. It doesfrustrate me because we get so many looks and questions. Our daughteris very outgoing (for a 7 mo old) and smiles at everybody so lots justsmile back, but we get a lot of questions too. I would love to seeanother baby when I am out. Even after she is done with her band if Iever see another mom with a baby in a band I'm going to make sure sheknows we did it too! I'll be so thrilled one day when I do run intosomeone.Hang in there,=christine mom to sydney/ 7 mo/ Starband 5-31-06>> Hi> I was wondering if anyone on this site lives in New york in the 5 boros > area. Guest guest
I've heard that McCartney's son was in a band! Re: Plagio Helmet kids in Public? I hope people don't take their babies helmets off in public! They could be missing out on precious growth and correction. If there is any extra time that we take our son's helmet off it's to cuddle and kiss his little head at home. I live in an area (San , CA) where there is a relatively high number of banded babies. The center where we take our son to says they fit about 30 babies a month! Where are they all!!! I have not seen one, except for when we are at an appt. Guest guest
I've actually had that same response from some adults-- they think the helmet is "cute"! It doesn't offend me or anything-- I kind of have to laugh when they say that.Alison Plagiocephaly From: abartilet2002@...Date: Tue, 25 Jul 2006 05:38:08 +0000Subject: Re: Plagio Helmet kids in Public? Today I was at Babies R US with my banded baby boy. A little girl (about 8-9) was staring and staring at my son DJ. Of course this was nothing new so I smiled at her and went along shopping. I just kept feeling her eyes on us and thought she might say something rude (I find children have no inner dialogue when it comes to the helmet)....she finally walked over and said super shy and quietly with a big smile...."You're baby is so cute with that on his head" She was sooooo sweet!!! It's hard going about your day never knowing what people might say or what they're saying behind your back. But oh well is what I say! My baby's gonna have a nice round head ;)DJ (6 months) Starband >> Hi> I was wondering if anyone on this site lives in New york in the 5 boros > area. Guest guest
We live 55 miles North of NYC and I had the same experience.....my best advice....decorate the helmet...it looks less scary. Contact a newspaper and have them run an article. We did that and my son was a local celebrity. We couldn't go ANYWHERE...seriously....without someone chatting with us after recognizing him. Good luck! I haven't seen anyother banded babies in the past few months since i have become moreaware of bands. i guess most nyc-ers haven't seen many banded babieseither. i wasn't feeling so great after seeing her in it for the first time -the walk certainly didn't help. even with all the stares, i wouldn't take the band off - the time init is too precious and important. --julie>> Hi> I was wondering if anyone on this site lives in New york in the 5 boros > area. Guest guest
That's great advice... we did the same thing. Decorating is a great ice-breaker, especially if it has your baby's name on it. We were also featured in the local media and a lot of people recognized us from the news and came up to talk to us. Guest guest
I've found that if I make eye contact with the people staring and say "HI!" they'll either turn away in embarassment or ask what the helmet is for. Either they've gotten what they deserve (being embarassed) or I'm given the chance to educate them!
