Guest guest
I was just wondering if there were any young, type one diabetics in the group. I've been reading through old posts and just curious. Im only 19 years old, diagnosed when I was 17. I grew up in a small town and no one knew/understood this whole diabetes thing and I was just looking for someone my own age who knew what I was going through. Thanks guys! ~

Guest guest
Well, I'm 27, was just diagnosed t1 in May...am I too old? LOL I do have a gray hair or 3. ;o) My cousin is 6 or 7 now - and he was diagnosed at 3 years old. No on else in my small town has it except my neighbor who is probly 50 something and type 2. We talk a little, but there are just so many differences. Good luck and welcome to the group! -Jess from NY > > I was just wondering if there were any young, type one diabetics in > the group. Guest guest
My son is 15 and was just diagnosed in Nov. I joined this group to get info and support for me. He seems to be fine with it all but he might like to have other kids to talk to. I had looked for a group just for kids but hadn't found one. Maybe if we find enough teens/young adults, we could make another group.. I'll ask my son if he'd be interested in talking with others. Guest guest
Hi , I mostly lurk here, but I just turned 24 and have had type 1 since I was 9. I've actually created a list for young adults (late teen to late twenties) with type 1 or type 2 diabetes called Young Diabetics. I created it in August but haven't really spent any time promoting it, so it's pretty quiet right now, but I'd like to get it going. I created it so that younger people with diabetes can talk about issues specific to our age group. You or anyone else interested can get more information by going to http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/youngdiabetics/ or subscribe by sending a blank message to youngdiabetics-subscribe . (I hope it's okay with the moderators to advertise here. If not, my apologies.) Jen

Not me for sure. ;o) I know where you're coming from. I've got no one near me except two type 2's who are in their 50's, and my cousin who is 6 and type 1. Not much I can talk to any of them about, ya know? ;o) have a super day! -Jess

Guest guest
Hey, you didn't offend me at all! I'm sure you have, those little things like going for pizza with friends just isn't the same, is it? I can't image swimming on the swim team as I did while trying to keep my glucose at optimal levels for those sprints. And having had gestational diabetes with each of my 3 pregnancies I know the role hormones play, I can't imagine going through puberty with the highs and lows of glucose. Honestly, I went through a lush phase as a young adult. I remember knowing a girl who was dxed with type 1 when she was 13. I remember asking her once how on earth she got drunk. She told me about how she would get drunk while keeping an eye on her sugar. Now I'm older and a Christian, I'm abhorred to think that I ever had that mentality or actually did some of the things I did, but truth is, these are real issues a teen/young adult with diabetes must face and I don't envy your choices before you at all! Guest guest
Its not about drinking or learning tips on how to manage getting drunk and staying good to my blood sugars. Those are definately issues, but I have excellent friends who know that Im a diabetic and play by different rules. Im not about to let diabetes rule my life and take me out of the game as a young adult. Im still learning to live with it. Its proven more difficult than expected and Im just looking for others dealing with college and similiar issues. This group helps a lot. Just knowing that Im not the only one out there, even though it seems like EVERYONE is talking about diabetes and carbs. Type one or two, young or older...we all deal with some of the same issues and I truly appreicated all the support! ~ > > Hey, you didn't offend me at all!
