Guest guest
HI~ I've been reading on this board for several months although posted nothing until now. Hayley is 10 and started the diet just under a week ago. Her Ketones are great and no seizures but she HATES the diet and already wants off. Question is...when do you let them make these choices? I know how frustrated she is and I hate to see her so miserable. She wants bread....and bad!!! I kinda think the Low Glycemic Index diet would be better for her but who knows about the seizures... Anyone else with kids Hayley's age that are resistant to the diet? Do they get over it? Do you make them regardless of what they want? HELP!!!!! Guest guest
, My daughter is only 5, but it took her awhile to get over eating pasta bread and thai food etc, keep at it, i think their bodies go though a withdrawl of the glucose, but it does get better, pretty soon, she'll not be hungary and probally will get over the craving. good luck amanda > HI~ > > I've been reading on this board for several months although posted > nothing until now. Guest guest
Our daughter is 9 years old and has been on the diet for over 2 years. She hates the seizures enough that she will be compliant. But, whenever we have something special that she can't have we give her some sort of treat in the form of a toy etc. I like what Jill had to say. If we were in your situation we would set up a 2 week goal, then 4 weeks etc. (whatever was appropriate for her). The short term goals of staying on the diet would be money, small toy, going bowling...whatever appealed to her. The long term (1 month to several months) would be something extra special that she was wanting (bike, doll, clothes etc.). Rhonda
Guest guest
This is a hard question to answer My daughter is 10 yrs old-- on the diet for 3 years The first few weeks can be rough My daughter ate with me--and the family ate separately at the very beginning--then she wanted to eat with her siblings!! Her brothers and sisters were so careful about eating in front of her! I gave up pasta etc..to eat more like her--like being on Atkins! We gave up going out to eat at first When the kids got Halloween treats she got Money-gifts Food was exchanged for gifts Of course she loved not having seizures and was able to go back to school--she had been on Hospital home bound tutoring So--the diet became so much -less of an issue You do need to get very creative with meal plans-- We opted to do our own meals from the very beginning--at least after the first 2 weeks--our dietitian is not as KID oriented --as others Plus we know our kids PLUS my daughter liked the idea of helping to plan her menus After 3 yrs --we are trying the Keto-Atkins approach My daughter was never seizure free --so we accept that--yet her Quality of life is " being a real kid " -- We were very strict the first 2 yrs because she still had seizures--now we find she (so far) has no more seizures with our trial diet than the strictness of the Keto diet--BUT as they say 2 yrs is a goal to keep the kids on--and at this time weaning can take place 2 yrs is not a long time--really especially when you will see your child blossom--ours did especially socially and academically There are lots of low carb products--but some are too high in protein Some kids cannot tolerate soy, etc--once you get a feel for your child, her diet and seizures--you can TRY VERY SLOWLY different foods There are great recipes in the recipe file on the Keto site on Yahoo Many of us parents have great ideas My daughter was able to tolerate the low carb low protein bread available-(some kids cannot)--and this made a good change to her diet in the 3 years we NEVER used any product with sugar No white flour, No potatoes, Not rice etc... What ratio are you on? How many meals are you allowed? My daughter would rather eat 4-5 smaller meals than 3 big meals When things get bad enough--(10 yrs old-is an impressionable age!)--ask if the ratio can be lowered--it is amazing the change in foods with a lower ratio AND--forget about breakfast lunch etc...-my daughter eats any meal at any time--so she may have pizza-for breakfast also we always tried to have meals already prepared Decisions are hard on my daughter and we found deciding what to eat was absolutely horrible for her Your focus will be NOT on food but on other things My daughter loved the presents--even small things--renting a game-- (we have 5 kids-so we could not offer her gifts--that were costly) It is just the idea of her getting something special even a special time--together-= Even at Holiday time--we always had pasta for the Holidays--well on Christmas we had pasta and pizza --so she could have her pizza & we could also have pizza --yet the older kids still had their traditional pasta Give us ideas of the food your daughter likes, the ratio, her stats and let us help you Maybe your daughter would like to e-mail some of our kids--it could help Best to you and your daughter It IS worth it!!! Guest guest
Depending on your ratio you might actually be able to work a small amount of whole wheat bread into her meal plans. I know we could, even at a 3.5:1. We started the diet when Jess was 4 and fought with her four nine months to get her to eat anything. Then she went on a complete food strike and just stopped eating, made herself quite sick. Looking back I think between the diet and the depakote she was likely to ketotic and that took her appetite away. Anyway, after about a month of the food strike, we lowered her ratio a bit and added in some starches - cheerios (even though you only get a few grams, there are a lot of cheerios in a gram), whole wheat bread, small amount of pita bread to use as a base for pizza, probably more, can't think of them now - that food strike was over 5 years ago! Although I would probably wait a little longer, try to play around with what fruits and veggies (just cuz they are healthier choices than the starch which would take up all your carb allowance), down the road if you really need to, you could probably add back some starches. If you post her favourite foods, you will probably get some ideas as to how to incorporate them. had no choice when we started, we fought like hell but the decision was ours, she had no idea cognitively what was going on. She is now 11 and we are weaning the diet. After 6+ years she is screaming that she has had enough. So I know where you are coming from. But the other ideas you have heard about weekly rewards and bigger longer term ones are good ones. Hopefully they will work for you good luck , 's mom > HI~ > > I've been reading on this board for several months although posted > nothing until now.
