Guest guest
Virginia - WELCOME! I am a SAHM mom of 5 - and my baby just turned 8 months old last week. To get a plagio diagnosis see your pediatrician, a Cranio-facial DR or some see a Neuro. They give you a prescription for a helmet if needed. Then you go to a provider (most get a DOC band, a StarBand or a Hanger Band) There they take measurements and cast or scan for the band and do all your fitting adjustments. You can go to a Cranial Tech place and they can do an evaluation to see if a band is needed and if it will help. As far as insurance goes - It all depends on your coverage. Do you know if you had DME or P & O coverage (durable medical equipment or prosthetics & orthotics) If you did have that coverage, can you get COBRA for your last coverage or has it been too long? I think you have to apply within 60 days. If you don't have DME or P & O coverage then it will be an uphill appeals battle to get it covered. And even w/ COBRA - it would probably be cheaper just to pay for the band (at least it was here in CA when we were doing research) If you do wait (which is a tricky situation) you may not have the coverage then either. As far as waiting the 3 months - that's 3 months of growth and correction time you are losing if a band is needed. By the time your baby is 18 months old the plates are fused and you don't really get anymore correction. It can be done at 12 months old but the older the baby the longer it takes to get the correction. I've heard about places that do payment plans and also CreditCare has medical loans at no interest. HTH! Feel free to ask any questions and keep us updated on what is happening!!!!
Guest guest
Hi, my name is Virginia. My son is 8 months old today. Since he was born I had questioned the ped. about him always holding his head to the right. Well, at the 6 month visit, they finally diagnosed him with tort. He has been treated for this by a chiropractor since then. The tort. is much better, but now the chiro. thinks he may have plagio, which I agree with. My husband lost is last job and just started a new one. I am a sahm to 4 young children and we have no insurance yet. Could be three months before we have insurance again. Is there anyway that we could get assistance with getting a helmet for my son? I don't want to wait three months to address this issue. I am just starting to research plagio and am really glad I came across this group. Thanks in advance, Virginia P.S. Is anyone from NC? Who would I see to address this? Thanks in advance!! I had to keep bugging my ped - I found when I came right out and ask dfor THIS or THAT referral he gave it to me - If he is willing to send you to a Plastic Surgeon that is good - But see if you can get in to see a Cranio-Facial DR - They are the ones who treat cleft palates and other cranio-facial disorders. Is there a Cranial Tech near you? If you take your baby there they can do an eval and then you can take that to your dr and he may give you the script based on that. BE PERSISTENT and BE STRONG!! You are your baby voice for what your son needs! To find a dr on your own Do a google of your area and Cranio drs - you may find one or look here: CAPPS State Contacts & Doctor Listings HTH!!! Guest guest
I spoke with the chiro this morning and he wants to refer me to a pediatric chiro that will adjust the fontanelles in his head. I then called my ped to ask for a prescription and he said that everything he had heard about the helments and bands was bad and that he wants to refer me to a plastic surgeon. We are not happy with either suggestion. I know that my son will need a band and I don't want to keep postponing it. I guess I will just have to beg and plead with the ped. The finance aren't a problem. My hubby said to do whatever it takes. Do you have any suggestions as to how I can convince my ped that this is what we want to do and what we feel is best for our son now? Thanks in advance!! > > Virginia - WELCOME! Guest guest
plain and simple i would tell your ped that this is what you as his parents think is the next best step and that you are asking for a prescription and that if need be you will go over his head, tell him you would rather the specialist decide if this is somthing he needs, your ped doesnt have the authority or the experiance to tell you that he doesnt need this megan Re: Help me please!! Guest guest
How about showing your ped some before and after photos? There are tons in the photos section, and you can probably even find some that look similar to your child's condition. My daughter has severe brachy (was 100% now around 92%) and I would be more than willing to share some photos. Good luck and keep trying. change peds if you need to. -christine mom to sydney/ 7 mo /starband 5-31-06 > > > > Virginia - WELCOME! Guest guest
hi, i just wanted to clarify something that was very unclear when we began this journey. a cranial facial surgeon is a plastic surgeon. when you look for a cranial facial specialst thich is who you need to see they are plastic surgeons. when i was searching for a cranial facial specialist i called the st barnabas health network trying to find one on my own since 4 idiot pediatricians swore there was nothing wrong with my sons head for 15 months and i couldn't find one because dr hall in my area who is the cranial facial dr who you need to see was listed under plastic surgeon and not under cranial facial. good luck. > > > In a message dated 8/8/06 8:23:27 AM, v_kuntz@... writes: > > > > Do you have any suggestions as to how I can convince my ped that > > this is what we want to do and what we feel is best for our son now? > > Thanks in advance!! > > > I had to keep bugging my ped - I found when I came right out and ask dfor > THIS or THAT referral he gave it to me - If he is willing to send you to a > Plastic Surgeon that is good - But see if you can get in to see a Cranio-Facial DR - > They are the ones who treat cleft palates and other cranio-facial disorders. > Is there a Cranial Tech near you?
