Faith,

Do you have Medicaid also? If you do then you can call your worker and they will take and make you part of your case and they will pay the premium. If you are not on Medicaid, then you need to go and apply for medicaid and they will help too.

Hope this helps

-- Question about medicare

Hi everyone. I have a question about medicare. I've been TRYING to get through to my local SS office, but can't get through yet. So until then, can anyone tell me if you HAVE to take the medicare while you are on state medicaid? I just got a letter from SS telling me that beginning in Nov. they will be taking $66.60 out of my check for medicare and I can't afford for them to do that. Money is tight as it is. I live in PA if that's any help to anyone with info about this. Thanks alot everyone. I don't know where else to turn. Gentle hugs to all and prayers for low pain moments. I know we all could use a few. Faith

Faith,

As far as i know as soon as you are eligible for medicare you have to take it..medicaid will not cover you after you are eligible for medicare. You can apply for medicaid to cover whatever medicare doesn't if you have low income enough that you qualify for it. I know that when I became eligible for medicare...even though it brought my income down to 700 for 3 people in the household...that I had to buy into medicare...then i was told by medicaid i made too much to get medicaid...which i couldn't believe...so i had to buy into secure horizons which costs me another 127 a month...so i would be covered in case of hospitalization and only pay 10 as a co-pay for each drs visit instead of 20% of the cost of the visit...and it covers 150 every 3months towards prescriptions. So now I have 3 people living on 500 a month...until ssdi feels like starting benefits for my kids...which we have been waiting for and fighting for since I was approved last

feb. Unfortunately that's the system. If you find out something different please let me know....so I can do somehting about my health care situation. Hugs..Ginny

I have both medicaid and Medicare. and Have no problem carrying both, but you will have straight medicaid when you have medicare. I first was on medicaid and then was approved for medicare and did not have to give up medicare or straight medicaid. I just contacted my worker and let her know, that my medical had changed. I then told her that I would have to pay a preimum and that changed that it was covered. Any questions let me know

Sheri,

I will have to contact medicaid again...but over and over again I am told I make too much on ssdi. I was told when I had no medical ins at all and was waiting for ssdi to kick in and had no income and was living off credit cards and personal loans i didn't qualify but my kids did...so my kids still get medicaid...but I can't which made no sense..even went to all the appeals..and lost all of them. I own a house...and a car...but the car ins't paid off and won't be for 4 yrs....but they counted that as assets. If you can let me know how you did it..I would be so happy..since 500 doesn't even cover a quarter of what I spend each month on just neccessary things...never mind extras especailly since my scripts right now are costing me about 2000 a month. I did take me awhile but I really don't know what they did that only income that I had was my ssdi adn my daughters. They tried to tell me that I had to use a spindown and my daughter didn't. When my ssdi went in i applied again and most of my ssdi went to rent. I didn't get my daughters ssi until almost a year later. don't know if that will help but thats what I did

Thank you everyone for the info, but I'm still confused. Let me rephrase the question if you don't mind. I live in PA. I have state medical aid (medicaid). Now SS is saying that starting Nov they will be taking money out for medicare. Do I have to take the medicare? And if I do have to take it, can I also keep the state medicaid? I did not get hurt at work or in an accident, so I have no WC or insurance worker to deal with. I got hurt at home. Twisted my ankle in my driveway. I cannot afford the price for the medicare. I can hardly survive on what I get from SS as it is. Do I have to accept it or can I turn it down? I've been trying to get through to my local SS office, but they are the only ones for 4 counties and are extremely busy. Takes forever to get through to them. Should I maybe call my case worker at the welfare office and see what they can tell me? I'm at a lose and have no idea what to do. It's bad enough that I still get no meds for this crap and that my current drs stink, I really don't need this on top of everything else. HELP!!!! Faith
