New to the group

Hello! My name is Cindy and I am a single mother of 3 children, two of which

have CF. My oldest child's name is , she is 12 years old w/cf, my 8

year old son, who's name is Esaias no/cf and my baby boy, Caleb, who is 3

years old w/cf

It has been difficult for people to understand our lifestyle and how I can

be so organized and emotionally together one minute, then in the same

breath, turn into a complete basket case that cries for no reason.

I try to explain to people in my life that my heart literally hurts when my

children hurt. It is a relief to know that I am, unfortunately, not alone.

Thank you.......Cindy/mother of 3

Cindy your story about being upbeat one day and crying the next sounds like

me. We do have A LOT to cry about and only our mind and body knows when is

the right time. Not always the appropriate time. Some days I get so

frustrated with every day things, work, schedules that it doesn't take much

to send me over the edge. Tonight it was my 11 year olds homework and her

newest saying, " I don't know how to do this but you are doing it wrong. " GIve

me the strength! Lynette 7w/cf and 11 w/ocf

Lynette,

Boy does that sound familiar my daughter says the same thing all of the time

about her homework it is a constant battle at our house and I hate to be the

one who is always the bad person to make her do it too. I also have many

bouts of crying. Lately I have had those crying spell because I have been so

amazed and how many people are out there that care about my girls well being.

I have had so many nice people do all they can to help us with the Car wash

and to help raise money for the CF foundation it has been wonderful. Today a

radio station called to interview me about the car wash and I did all I could

to hold it back. Deb A

Debbie, I use a heating pad on set Medium and have a clean thermometer close

nearby. It stays at about 102* all the time. I put the heating pad on a

pottery plate and then put my yogurt container on on the heating pad. I

cover it with a clean dishtowel to hold in a litlle of the heat and to keep

it dark. I check it about every 4 hours to stir it (for the first day) and

check the temp. You have to test the actual temp. of the yogurt - not the

container. The container should be made from glass. I let it go for 36 hours

total and usually use goat milk and stoneyfield brand plain yogurt as a

starter. I believe most of the casein in the yogurt starter is broken down

during the yogurt making process. Can anyone help me here? You can also make

yogurt out of nuts instead of milk and buy the starter online. If I am doing

any og this wrong please let me know.

How great that the heating pad method works so well for you! A

couple things I noticed. First, I don't think you're supposed to

stir the yogurt as it's culturing - you're supposed to leave it

alone and let the bacteria multiply without disturbing them. Taking

the temperature is fine, just don't stir. Also, 36 hours is too

much. I think it starts losing potency after 30 hours. I usually

leave mine for 25 or 26 and it turns out great. If you use cow

yogurt for starter, there will be trace amounts of cow dairy casein

in there, which, I understand, is different from goat dairy casein -

more difficult for the body to process. Making SCD legal yogurt does

not destroy casein, just lactose. We use the non-dairy starter. If

everyone seems to tolerate it fine, though, I wouldn't worry about

it.

Cindy. Thanks for the tips for my yogurt. Although I think I remember

reading on this site somewhere or maybe in a yogurt recipe that if you stir

it a few times the first day it thickens a little but, if I'm disturbing the

process...I will try to reduce the time to 26 hours and see if it still

works as far as potency and thickness goes. Where do you get the non-dairy

starter from? Lucy's Kitchen? I'm trying to get rid of the cow's milk so

that my daughter doesn't get anymore ear& sinus infections. So far so good.

But, I do see trace amounts of it still i some of her foods. She is still

very hyper at times but, finally sleeps through the night.

I use the Progurt starter from GI ProHealth.

http://www.giprohealth.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?

Screen=PROD&Store_Code=GIProHealth&Product_Code=Progurt&Category_Code

=starter

It seems expensive, but it lasts a long time, since it's only 1/4

tsp per 1/2 gallon of milk. I honestly don't know about the stirring

thing - I thought I'd read not to bother it. Let me know if stirring

actually does make it thicker. I drip our yogurt - I start with a

gallon of milk and end up with 1/2 gallon of yogurt once it's

dripped. It gets nice and thick. If it really does lose potency

after 30 hours, then 26 hour yogurt should be much more potent than

what you were using.

Good luck!
