Perhaps she is allergic to the foam. It has happened in the past to other

STARband users. Ask your ortho about it. Orthomerica makes a

hypo-allergenic foam that can be used with children with allergies. If you

ortho isn't aware of this have him/her contact at Orthomerica.

Starband rash

Hi. I am about to toss the helmet out. My daughter has had a non-stop

rash from the Starband and nothing seems to help. Her rash is so bad

that she has bloody spots. They keep telling me to keep it on her head

but I can't. When I take it off and she is scratching like crazy and

bleeding, I am not putting it back on! Anyone else have this issue and

did it resolve? I am about to put the helmet to rest and let nature

take its course. I have a beautiful happy little baby that does not

need to be burdened with this pain!

Hi, My daughter Gia had a rash that sounds like what your discribing. I posted pics a while back under the "G" folder. Take a peek and see if it looks the same. The rash was only where the helmet touch. She wore a Starband. Turns out she was allergic to the foam inside the helmet. I was using O & P Lab in St. s Missouri, my orthotic guy called Orthamerica and after recasting Gia they sent her a new helmet free of charge. The new helmet had a different foam in it called, "Aliplast" I believe. In any event it worked and the rash never came back. As a mom and a nurse I would not put that helmet back on her head especially if she has bloody spots. Check with your ortho people if they don't listen call orthamerica you will want to speak with . Hope this helps!! Eryn Giavanna,

So sorry about you poor babies rash!!! They should not be wearing the band if there is readness - especially if ther is bleeding - is the ortho telling you to keep the band on? I have heard about some babies being allergic to the foam inside the band - do a search of old messages to read about what they did - If I remember correctly, I think Starband replaced the foam with a hypo-allergenic foam. Talk to your ortho about that - If there is a simple solution don't give up the band!

- If there is redness on the sideburn area - it is more likely a pressure mark and not a rash. These are normal - but not desired. Like your ortho said don't put the band on - But a simple adjustment should help.

I know for us we went back to the ortho several times in the 1st weeks to get the fit to be right. But once it was right the results were wonderful! Stick with it! You won't be sorry!

HI we also just started the starband helmet and I feel like you do. My son Evan 6 mo has really sensitive skin and just for having it on for one hour he broke out near his sideburn really bad. its like a sore more than a rash. Our ortho told us to keep it off till it heals and we are going for an adjustment tomorrow. We have decided to try it one more time but if he breaks out again we will not pursue the helmet. sandra californiatiffanyhixson <tiffanyhixson@...> wrote: Hi. I am about to toss the helmet out. Hi .

Before you decide to quit the band so early, is there anything else

that you can find as a solution? Is it just a matter of his skin

needing to get used to the band? Does he have sensiive skin? Can

the Starband provider make you a new kind with a different foam that

won't irritate his skin so much?

How severe is Evan's flatness? I ask his because depending on the

severity of uncorrected plagio, he will have a hard time finding a

bike kelmet that fits, he will have a hard time finding a football

helmet that fits if he wan't to play in high school. Even finding

sunglasses that fit will be a chore. If he's mild then this might

not be such an issue. But really, just be absolutely sure that you

can be happy with his headshape as he grows into young adulthood.

And also be sure that if he asks why he has such a hard time with

sunglasses, that you can explain that to him satisfactorily.

did you try putting the cotton in that area of the helmet? i am telling you... it really works. madi had the worse sideburn rash before the cotton. the doctor will probably tell you not to, but i did it anyway. and once he saw how i did it, he said it was fine. cotton is a breathable material that is good on the skin. don't use a piece of cotton fabric though, use an actual cotton ball , unroll it and use double sided tape to keep it in the helmet. candice, ny sandra arnold <disneybrat1@...> wrote: HI we also just started the starband helmet and I feel like you do. Hi, My name is Betty my baby girl is Alessia, she is 6 months old, and has been on the band for 5 consecutive days. I had that same problem, she was originally banded 2 weeks ago, there was a nasty rash, I was told to keep it on, but did not. The band was adjusted and she is now doing great, she seems unaware of the helmet. I would not throw the helmet away because you are having a rough time with the adjustment. have you seen the Older Plag children? It appears that nature does not necessarily help. Only the helme does. remember you only have so long to do something about it. just do what ever you can live with later. Love, Betty. hi Becky We will try other things before we quit it is just getting a little bit annoying, I am not going to put my baby through this if its going to be so much of a hassle on all of us. I dont know if he has mild or moderate or severe. they never said. to me he looks fine, he does flattness on his right side but with him getting older and not laying his back soo much I think it will round out on its own. we will see. I will keep everyone posted thanks for the support! Becky <res103198@...> wrote: Hi .Before you decide to quit the band so early, is there anything else that you can find as a solution? HI Eryn. When was this? My ortho says she already has the hypoallergic foam. I am not buying it. I am considering going for a Doc band and just paying for it... This is upsetting me. Hi , I hear you - my son has had tons of trouble with red spots, rashes, and pressure sores. We are just trying to work though it, but I definitely understand your frustrations. I called the NP at the neurosurgery clinic earlier this week to tell her I planned to throw our helmet on the burn pile in our yard. She advised me not to. Ha! In all seriousness, just try to stick with it. I am just starting to use the aquaphor to see if it helps with Truman. So far we've seen zero results from wearing the band - we've just been through hell with the sores, etc. But, we are going to stick with it for awhile longer. Hang in there! Gia got her first starband in August '06 we got the new one in

Sept '06. I suggest calling Orthoamerica yourself, you are going to

want to speak with . The foam you want is Aliplast. The

Aliplast foam is shiney and soft. It doesn't absorb the sweat like

the regular foam does so there is less smell. I did speak with one

mom who went through the same thing, when Gia first started with the

rash and she had to deal with it all herself. She said was

very nice and got a new helmet right out to her. Its worth a shot,

those things are expensive. Meanwhile my pediatrician suggested,

cortisone cream for the rash, neosporin for the open spots, and

benadryl for any itching.

My husband wanted to stop the helmet as well. In the long run the

helmet works. I know its hard seeing your baby hurt. I thought I

lost my mind when I saw Gias rash. Hang in there. If your ortho

won't help go at it yourself.

Hope this helps!!

Now that the rash has cleared up I have been using a sock underneath the helmet and it appears to be WORKING! She has slept in it two nights in a row and there is no sign of rash or red spots and she does not grab at her head nearly as much when she takes it off. Yep that is the sock. They gave me a bag of them and I cut a hole for her face and two for her ears and it goes all the way down her neck! It is also nice because the helmet does not smell when you take it off. I thought her head would be all sweaty but so far it has been really good. I am keeping my fingers crossed that this works...
