Deana,

I think it is just a phase, and from what our teacher advisor tells me most

kids starting out in Junior High go through this. Aimee is involved in extra

activities, like Karate (which she is now a Black Belt), Drums and Cartooning

also she recently started a LEGOs robotic class. These activities are limited

in size so that hopefully germ control is down, and she still gets to be

around people her own age. We live in California and there are several

Charter Schools here, parents can choose what they want to teach their

children and the State Education pays for it as long as it is not religious

based. Homeschool works for us, because of all the Doctors appointments and

IVs we have to do during the year she would be behind because of missed

school, this way even if she doesn't feel up to par she can still do some

school and stay ahead of the game. Plus if we didn't homeschool Dr. Chipps

wouldn't have anything to give her a hard time about being good to her

teacher! ; )

Aimee was diagnosed at 5 mos. and I kept working till she was 17mos. Aimee

was hospitalized about every month till that point. We decided to keep her

home to try and keep her healthy, and slowly add extra activities so she can

become more social as she gets older.

We live near Sacramento, but there are Charter Homeschool programs throughout

Ca., I didn't feel qualified at first to teach my daughters, but the good

thing is the Charters provide credentialed teachers to help you out and

monitor the kids progress. The beauty of all this is usually the Charters

have what is called small group classes or cluster classes, and you can pick

and choose what you want your child to participate in, some of the classes

are academic some are for fun, and some are for PE purposes. I love they

opportunities they provide for the girls.

If you want more information on how to find a Charter in your area let me

know.

Hi Kathy Jo,

That is another one of the reasons I want to homeschool , because he

too would have to get up early like between 5:30 and 6 to get all of his

meds/vest therapy, and breakfast in. Do you think the lack of motivation is

because of the homeschooling or just a phase for that age range? Thank you

for your input!

Take care,

Hi All!

I am just wondering what views people have on this with regards to them

building up immune systems when they school with other children and catch

colds etc?

Our daughter goes to a nursery school at 17mths (and has done since 2mths)

as I'd always thought it was better for her to get stuff now so she'd be

stronger with the CF...am I totally wrong with this line of thinking???? I

am concerned now!

I have read that in the earlier years, children are more susceptible

to lung infections simply because their lungs are not as developed. I

would think that with a child without cf, it would be just fine to

expose them to the germs early so they have more immunity when they go

to school, but I am not sure about a child with cf.

I know that you cannot completely keep your child away from germs, and

there is a balance to be had in terms of living as normal a life as

possible and keeping them as healthy as possible. I think that is

truly our big decision as parents. I have met some parents of cfers

who will not let their cf children go to places like Chuck E. Cheese

and Six Flags because of the germs. Others feel that we can't keep

them from germs so why try. I truly believe there is a happy medium,

but each of us has to find what works for our family.

I would like to homeschool Zachary in the earlier years because that

is when children are most likely to sneeze, cough, and touch each

other CONSTANTLY and basically spread the germs. As children get

older, there is less physical contact. I plan to take other

precautions such as that antibacterial hand gel and Clorox wipes (to

use on things like grocery carts), but I don't want to keep him from

living life so I don't see having any place " forbidden " .

I don't think there are any right or wrong answers. You just do the

best you can with the hand you are dealt in life. Some kids get more

sick than others. The problem with lung infections and inflammation

is that the more of that there is, the less time the lungs will

function. There are costs and benefits to all of these approaches.

You just have to decide what works best with your particular

situation.

HI Kathy,

I have a 4 year old with CF and I live in California. I am new to this

site and a bit overwhelmed with our recent diagnosis and all the

decisions of school etc. Can you tell me about charter schools and the

alternatives? Sam starts kindergarten in AUgust and I was advised that a

public education is best so that he can have a tutor at our home if he is

out ill alot?

I do not feel qualified to home school adn my son is incredibly active

and social?

where in CA do you live if I may ask?

Murgie
