My doctor was one of those forgetters, and his nurse wasn't much better, she said to use laxatives when I was first having constipation from the narcotics and called them in desperation. These people have obviously never been on any kind of steady narcotics, but you would think that due to their profession, they might have a clue! Of course the laxatives finally work, but rather violently, and I knew that wouldn't be suitable for use on a regular basis. Fortunately, my sister-in-law, who also has lupus and is on daily pain meds, told me about stool softeners. So now I know to take 2 docusate sodium capsules every day that I'm taking the narcotics. For any of you that are new, these are stool softeners that can be found over the counter at any pharmacy. WH&P, Heidi in SC

All patients have the responsibility to know what they're taking and the possible side efffects and interactions. There are simple ways to learn these things. You can and should ask the doctor before swallowing anything. Speak with the pharmacists. They gladly provide printed drug literature. I get such a print-out with every prescription. You can purchase a drug information book. They're great investments that are not very costly. Most major pharmacy chains sell them. Or use your computer search engines. You've got them at your disposal 24/7. This is all part of being that educated consumer/patient that I have written about more than once. Guest guest
Dear Debs, Why don't you try Casagara Sagrada bark. It's avilable at most health food stores. It acts as a natural laxitive with no stimulants or side affects. It works for me most of the time. Since I've been on the Fentanyl patches I have an increasing problem with contipation. Try it, it's not very expensive and not only helps with the constipation but it has excellent natual colo cleaning effects. It's a cold cereal that contains whole flax seeds, a natural laxative that's available in the supermarket. I've added it to home baked muffins with great success. But when my bowels were locked up from all of the Questran, I was on a daily dose of Senocot-S. I was fortunate in that it did not irritate my system. I'd buy bottles of 1000 from my Canadian pharmacist to save money. -E > http://movies.yahoo.com/
