My internist automatically gives all celiacs a monthly B12 shot and

extra folic acid (1mg). If you still menstruate he also follows

iron levels carefully. I also take vitamin D because I don't eat dairy.

My doc is super careful. Once a year he tests my blood for all

vitamin levels, kidney and liver function, lipid levels and a whole

bunch of other things that escape me. if any levels are off he

rechecks in 3 months.

I admire your doc for telling you he/she is not well versed on CD.

I get my iron (fe) levels checked frequently as well as my potassium

(K or K+) and magnesium (mg). My doc also follows my folic acid

levels because I've had severe anemia in the past (not related to

CD, that we know of). Occassionally, he'll throw in sodium and zinc

levels, too.

best of luck and let us know which tests you get him/her to run.

Can I have your doc? Mine stinks in comparison.

I would love to get a B12 shot and folic acid. I would love someone

to offer to draw a liver panel. These are all things I am going to

ask about at my next appt. I just wish I didn't have to ask. I

wish that they would be proactive and supportive.

How often are people getting their " levels " drawn?

I get B-12, B complex, folic acid and magnesium from my

endocrinologist to inject myself and oral iron supplements. At

first I was taking one shot per week and taking 2 iron tabs (not

sure the mg). A year later I am taking a shot once a month or when

I remember and one iron tab a day. He tests for nutrients (iron,

magnesium, Bs and folic acid) and lipid every three to 4 months and

a liver and kidney panel once a year. But, I also have Type 2

diabetes which encourages him to test more frequently.

> Liver panels are important-

============

mine are still whacky 18 months after going GF. I've made some

dietary changes and go back for a recheck in 2 months. If they still

aren't back my internist wants me to go and see a specialist.

any ideas on how to help my liver?

  • 1 month later...

If you go to Kirkman's site for vitamins you can punch in gluten free and find

the ones that are gf. My son takes supplements for autism from there and we

take daily vitamins from them also. Before dx, I used so many tums and pepto

bismol.....not anymore. Haven't even touched them. Such a relief.
