Cheryl - I don't have specific knowledge of your band but I will tell you my experience.

My dd's asym did not get worse but it also didn't get better. Let me back up - some of the asym got better - her forehead bossing went back to normal. but her nose still slants to the left. We thought the band might be the cure all but we have come to realize that the asym is caused by something else. She has a left side facial/jaw asym. where everything on the left is smaller. She also has left tort I cannot get an answer as to if the tort is causing the asym or not.

At one point the band was getting too small and it was actually causing a ring or ridge around the top of her head where there was an opening. But we got a new band and it went away.

DOes your son have torticollis?

I would voice concerns to the ortho about the facial asym getting worse. They may have some answers for you.

Hello All- our son has been in his custom Helmet from sick kids in Toronto

for about two months now (he is nine months- 8 corrected). When they take a

(digital camera shot) using a bird's eye view of his head I can see that the

flat spot (from this angle) has rounded out. I don;t think much has

improved regarding his facial asymetry. The orthotist said that the

asymetry is the last to correct. Should I be seeing some changes as we go

along though? I am concerned about the " slit/opening " which is on the flat

spot. I wonder if it is possible if the shape of his helmet in this area-

at the level of the ear- could still be " pushing out " causing the facial

asymetry from correcting. Sometimes i think it is better and other times

worse. I can see his one eye seems to becoming more almond shape.

Yes, the facial assymmetry is the last to correct. It is not being

directly impacted by the band since the band isn't covering the

face. So as the head corrects the face follows hence the timing.

The slit opening is usually on the flat spot. it's the " weakest "

area of the band and since the flat spot doesn't need any holding

power it's best over there. It provides little resistance to growth

which is a good thing.

Hi, if your baby has tort then PT/stretches may also be needed for the

facial asymmetry to correct - since the underlying muscles may be tight.

Hi - our orthotist said that based on a casting taking when he first

started treatment the slit is placed in the middle of the flat spot. He

seems to have rounded out on the one side now and hence, the slit now seems

to be at the edge of the flat spot. Do you think this would impact further

progress/gains? our orthotist said they don't get new helmets- they just

shave out foam as they go. It concerns me that the flat spot isn't centered

on the slit now...cheryl

hi cheryl,

if that is the case, i think it might just be the " last part to

correct " as others say. my daughter had brachy with no facial asymm.

so i don't have first hand experience. during my daughter's time in

her band we had 2 follow up visits with our cranial facial plastic

surgeon - if you have something similar you could check with them too.

take care. -christine
