The amount of water is important because it will determine the volume of

formula. To arrive at a total volume, you would add your cc of water plus your

gm of Ketocal. This results in one calorie per cc of formula. Hannah was on 526

calories a day (all ketocal) her recipe was 450cc H2O and 73g powder.

keto cal question

I am needing 225 calories of the ketocal - I know it already the 4:1 ratio -

so why when I put the food values in my meal worksheet I can get the calories

right at about 31g of powder and the fat is on (pretty close)... but the carb

and protein are off. My dietician and the keocal company could also not answer?

Also is the amount of water critical? My dietican said I could use more water if

I wanted to is this true?

we are at

4:1 222.25 cal 3.4 g prot 22.2 g fat and 2.1 g cho

Is just the calories important?

I have never used ketocal. I prefer to use my own non-processed food,

plus my daughter is 28 years old!

The amount of protein in the diet varies with the age of the child.

Younger ones get 1.5 gm/kg of weight. Older ones get 1.0 gm/kg of

weight. This plus the number of meals and the calorie allotment will

dictate the amount of protein and carb. I imagine that the ketocal is an

average which perhaps satifies no one. How old is your child? What is

the amount of fat, protein and carb in the ketocal? You will have to

modify it to get the correct values for your child.

The amount of water can be increased within reason. Too much water at

once can dilute the ketones. It shouldn't be an issue with a meal. It is

more important between meals.

Ketocal per 100g powder = protein 15 carb 3 fat 72

Zaki is 17 months I use this only for the fourth meal at bedtime. Seems to

sustain him better than 2 tablespoons of food - and he is used to still taking a

bottle at night a comfort I do not see taking away from him too soon - he has so

little these days!

I will assume he weighs 10 kg. As an example, if he is on 75 calories

per kg, that would be 750 calories per day. At 1.2 gm/kg of protein,

that would be 12 gm of protein per day. Fat would be 75 gm per day and

carb would be 6.75 gm per day.

With the ketocal, it is slightly higher in protein and lower in

carbohydrate. It works out to about 1.5 gm/kg of protein per day which

is the amount usually given to a very young baby.

For 225 calories of ketocal, you need 31.25 gm of powder. That gives

22.5 gm of fat, 4.69 gm of protein and 0.94 gm of carb. Your planner is

likely giving something like 22.5 gm of fat, 3.6 gm of protein and 2.0

gm of carbs. (This is pretty close to the numbers in your first message.)

This is why you can't easily compare ratios for young children. 4:1 for

a baby under 1 year old is very different from 4:1 for a child of 2

years old.

Now what? Find a dietician who can do math?

Basically the difference is in the protein which for the ketocal is set

at about 1.5 gm per kg of weight and for you is set at about 1.2 gm per

kg of weight.

If you want to match your prescription, you have to add carb (and

probably oil) to the ketocal. Add do some more math.

Okay, here's the math.

To get to your prescription of 1.2 gm of protein per kg of weight, you

need 12 gm per day. The ratio of protein to carbohydrate has to be

1.8:1. You need 2.61 gm of carbohydrate or 1.67 more. This gives 4.69 gm

of protein and 2.61 gm of carbohydrate. To maintain the 4:1 ratio, you

have to add 6.7 gm of fat. Then the calories are increased to 292. To

get back to the desired 225 calories, you need to multiply everything by

0.77.

For the 225 calorie snack, you need 24.0 gm of ketocal powder, 5.16 gm

of extra fat and 1.29 gm of extra carbohydrate. Does that work out on

your worksheet? I might have made a mistake.
