Guest guest
We are having this exact same problem with our Starband, which my 6.5 month old has worn for two weeks. I haven't been able to get to the bottom of it yet - but we have an apt with our ortho tomorrow, and I'll be asking. It seems to me in the past I've heard these are either just places of bone that tend to protrude and maybe we're just noticing them now, or that they go away after the band is done. I'm not sure, but I'll let you know what our ortho says, and if anyone else wants to chime in, please do! I just about freaked thinking I was making him worse not better. > > Hi everyone, > > My five and a half month old son has been wearing his DOC helemt for > almost three weeks. Guest guest
My daughter has been wearing her DOCband for one week and I noticed the same thing but on the opposite side of the head as your son. Her bump happened after the first night she slept in it. We went in that morning and they shaved a little of the foam off where the bump occurred. Then we kept the band off until it went down. Last night was the first night she slept in it again and the same thing happened. I will be calling her orthoticist this morning to find out what to do about it. I will probably have to come in for another adjustment. Guest guest
That's a VERY common and perfectly normal bump, it's simply fluid retention and happens to many banded babies near the opening of their bands. If you would call CT, they can give you a better explanation than I can right now But really, it's just fluid retention and is completely normal w/the band and completely harmless! Guest guest
, I was wondering too if I am making his head worse. We have an appointment today to have it looked at. The technician said it sounded like soft tissue growth but it just doesn't seem right to me so we are having her look at it. I'll let you know what happens. > > > > Hi everyone, > > > > My five and a half month old son has been wearing his DOC helemt for > > almost three weeks. Guest guest
OK our ortho today said the bumps were fluid caused by the sides of the band holding...so it kind of squeezes it into those open areas. She said when the band is off, it would go away in 3-4 days. She also said she could taper those areas a bit more so there was slightly more space above the ear openings too, so the fluid could even back out. I think this makes sense to me for now. It sounds similar to the soft tissue answer you got from your ortho too. We'll see what happens! > > > > > > Hi everyone, > > > > > > My five and a half month old son has been wearing his DOC helemt > for > > > almost three weeks. Guest guest
I have heard a lot of people say the same thing - that it is just fluid build up and once you graduate from the band it goes away. Guest guest
Hi, The technician said that the bump is not caused by the helmet and that it was there previously to starting treatment. At Cranial Tech. they do a 3-D " headsicle " of your child's head and the bump was there. She said that it is where two of the bones come together. Our son has his 6 month checkup in two weeks so we are going to have the doctor look at it to be sure it's " normal " . > > > > > > > > Hi everyone, > > > > > > > > My five and a half month old son has been wearing his DOC > helemt > > for > > > > almost three weeks. Guest guest
We have a similar problem with my son, except his bump is in a different spot. My son has a DOC band and his bump is also on the open side where the velcro strap is, except his bump is where the band hits his skin behind the ear cut out underneath the velcro. It's feels like a protruding bone. Let us know if you find out what is causing this. , Mom to , 8 months > > > > Hi everyone, > > > > My five and a half month old son has been wearing his DOC helemt for > > almost three weeks. Guest guest
and and others- I am wondering what you found out about the bump- my son seems to be growing into the crack/opening and it seems to be developing a ridge there. I have had him in for re-adjustments about four times in regards to the same problem and it doesn't seem to be corrected yet! It is making me wonder if the slit/opening is in the wrong spot. I know during one of the original appointments our old orthotist cut a rather large piece out of where the " slit/opening " is (hence making the slit smaller as he said the helmet was too loose then). I am begininning to wonder if that was the cause of the problem. cheryl- mom to Liam- 9 months- custom helmet- Toronto >From: " anj595 " <anj595@...> >Reply-Plagiocephaly >Plagiocephaly >Subject: Re: hard bump at opening >Date: Fri, 26 Jan 2007 15:52:51 -0000 > >, > >I was wondering too if I am making his head worse. Guest guest
Hi Cheryl, At my son's six month checkup, I asked the pediatrician about the " bump/ridge " and she said it was okay. She said that he will round our more as he grows even after the helmet is off. The ridge does not seem as prominent as before when I first noticed it but I am still going to watch it carefully. > > > > > > > > Hi everyone, > > > > > > > > My five and a half month old son has been wearing his DOC helemt > >for > > > > almost three weeks. Guest guest
Hi , My son has had the DOC band for 2 weeks now. I also notice a bump at the opening on the side with the strap. I only notice it when I have his band off for bath time or to wipe sweat away. I am not too worried aobut it at this point as he kind of had bumps before and it seems like now that his head is growing the way it should be that one side doesn't have the bump and the other does almost like a goose-egg or like you said growing out of it. I don't think that is the case since they said his head is doing what its suppose to and so far we are pleased with the results we are seeing. It is definitely on my list to ask CT when I go next week. Let me know if you are given an answer for it. Thanks. PHX, AZ 8 month old son, DOC band vanessackm <vanessackm@...> wrote: Hi there - We never did get a better answer other than the bumps are fluid build up in the soft tissue. I tend to think this is the case because my son has had the helmet off more lately with fevers and then for overnight only wear, and the bumps do go down, though slowly. Also, when he's had it on all night, when I take it off, they do seem more pronounced. Lastly, when he gets closer to needing an adjustment, the bumps seem to get worse - like the helmet is squeezing tighter as he's grown into the last fitting and squeezing the fluid more into the open space. My son has a Starband not a Docband though, so I'm not as familiar with how the Docband fits with the open spot....on the Starband, the bumps tend to build up over the ears as there is some extra room cut out, but where the band closes, it closes all the way shut. One other thing to note - on the Starband, there are holes drilled out, and my son grew into the helmet so much that we had to have one of them filled in because he no longer needed correction in that spot, and he was getting a circular "suction" looking mark where the hole was open - the ortho said this again was edema, and his skull would not grow into that hole of course, but we'd fill the now unneeded hole in the helmet anyway for his comfort level. I hope that helps! > > > >> > > > Hi everyone,> > > >> > > > My five and a half month old son has been wearing his DOC helemt> >for> > > > almost three weeks. Guest guest
I posted on the Cranial Technologies site and was given the answer that it is fluid build-up under the skin that will go away within a few weeks of graduation. Like I said, I am going to ask next week when I go but for now I am going to trust that this what it is.
