Guest guest
I know it sounds wierd but cf kids can have wierd tastes too try ketchup ! used to go thru not wanting to take them but something about the ketchup packs(from mcs) used to make him swallow them .I think just to have something different. Maybe it is time to have her help start counting them out for you.If she controls some part of her care (yes even at her age) it helps not to mention the toddler stage of me do it maybe she is just early at it? Guest guest
First I can TOTALLY sympathize...we have been through this and it is so difficult and frustrating. The people on this list helped us get through with all their great suggestions. We tried all of them! Try all kinds of different foods. We finally settled on sorbet and loves to take his in that. Sometimes he shakes his head no and I say " you know if you don't take your enzymes you will get a tummyache " and he usually opens his mouth. Believe it or not, that works! It worked at 16 months old, too, I didn't think he would understand but he does. If she eats without taking them and does strain or appear uncomfortable while pooping, definitely say " Shelby, that tummyache is because you did not take your enzymes when you ate earlier. " It's a lot for a little one to understand, but I think gently pointing it out works. They " get " more than we give them credit for at this age. Another mom, Lori I think?, suggested offering foods that are okay to eat without enzymes. Like " here, Shelby, you can eat pretzels and juice, but until you take your enzymes, you can't have your yogurt. " Just be really consistent and though it sounds mean, don't ever feed her food with fat and protein without the enzymes first...then she will know, no matter what she does, she won't get her way (which is to eat without taking enzymes). Another thing that works here is LOTS and LOTS of praise the second she even begins to open her mouth to take them, or even if she isn't kicking and biting. We say " is SUCH a big boy, look how he takes his enzymes, " as we bring the spoon to his mouth and he proudly opens and swallows them. " Wow, big boy, great job, " we say while giving him his ursodiol and other medications. He has improved from a 10 month old who would spit out enzymes CONSTANTLY (this happened for 2-3 months) to an 18 month old who 95% of the time takes all medication happily. One last point, don't get angry or frustrated in front of Shelby when she refuses. This is the hardest part, for us, anyway, but that reaction will just make her more anxious. And, it's negative attention, and she may refuse enzymes for that negative attention. This is part of why it took us so long to get to stop spitting out enzymes. We were reacting to his behavior negatively and unknowingly reinforcing that behavior. *&~*&~*&~*&~*&~*&~*&~*&~*&~*&~*&~*&~*&~*&~*&~*&~*&~* mama to , 18 mo wCF and SZ Alpha and 3.5 yo SZ Alpha, noCF > > > Hi all, I might have known things were going too well. > I need some advice. Guest guest
I think every kid goes thru that. My youngest did it for a week and then realize I wasn't go to give up she we had a bad week but after that she decided to take them again. She swallowed pills by the time she was 1 year old. So I would say don't give up keep pushing and try other foods to put it in an even try having her swallow it whole. It wouldn't hurt her to bite it she would probable just try to spit it out after a while. I would show her how to swallow a pill and if she does praise her as MUCH AS POSSIBLE. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Hi all, I might have known things were going too well. I need some advice. I know it has been discussed before but we have tried most if not all the thing suggested and they are not working. The problem is: Shelby - 16 months wcf has started to refuse to take her medicine. Not just antibiotics but even her enzymes. She is on Creon 10 and only takes 1 to 1 1/2 per meal or snack and we were opening the capsules and putting the beads on to yoghurt or apple sauce or anything else. She has suddenly (last few days) started to refuse to take them. She won't open her mouth and screams and kicks and even bites her mother. She is hungry and wants to eat things but just won't take her enzymes. We have tried letting her eat first then half way through trying to offer the enzymes but that doesn't work either. Obviously if she was older we could explain that if she doesn't take them she will have a tummy ache but at 16 months she is too young to understand. Any suggestions? I don't think she could swallow the whole capsule she would try to chew it. Luv Grandma Maggs
Guest guest
Have you tried the capsule drinking cup. If you would like one, I would be happy to send. You could try.????? You put the capsule in a little " shelf " on the inside nearer the top of cup then put a forbidden fluid whatever she likes 7 you don't give her (like coke .choc milk , coffee, what ever and make a game out of it . She gets the drink at the bottom of cup , if she tilts high enough & the capsule goes down her throat. Maybe even an added prize , it cup is empty after. This would at least get her started back taking them. .she would tire of it maybe , but , at this point anything goes..........let me know with an address to ship to. No charge.good luck on whatever you try & it works!! LOVE & HUGS, grandmoMBEV Refusing to take medicine Hi all, I might have known things were going too well. I need some advice. Guest guest
She might not be to young to try to swallow them whole. This is what we do with Patti (16 months wcf)when she won't take her enzymes. We strap her in the high chair and give her lots of saltine crackers or pretzels. When her mouth is dry enough we giver her an enzyme to put in her mouth and then give her a drink from a straw. The sucking motion in the mouth from using the straw generally helps the enzyme to go down. You might check half way through the drink to see if it has gone down or if you need to put it further back in her mouth. Guest guest
Hi this is , If no one replys and says you have a cup I have one we never used. Oddly enough on the way to clinic one day accidentally swallowed a spree and all the way there I talked up about how small a capsule is compared to sprees (candies) And if that went down they would be easier. Ever since then its been a piece of cake for him. Reply back to me and let me know. Guest guest
Dawn, I agree about the control thing, still takes his enzymes in applesauce, but when he decides he doesnt want them I tell him he needs them but he can tell me when he is ready to take them, and he always takes them before he eats, but on his terms not mine, makes him feel a bit better about it I think. Take care, , mommy of 4, (17), and now a permitted driver, oh I am either getting old or just prematurely gray, Caleb (7) and still bossing the others around thinking he is the man of the house even though his daddy is home, (6) she is gonna be my artist and support her momma, since none of them are ever leaving home so they say, and (2 1/2) I believe he will be a baseball player, has the best throw of anyone I know, and I have the bruises to prove it, a big ole attitude, bright blue eyes and a devlish little grin, oh yeah, and he has CF. Guest guest
Just a thought but my son not quite two w/cf was staring to do the same thing with refusing his medicines. Some because of the taste like Zantac and predisone but the enzyme we haven't had to much problems when he was little we started making it very routine medicine and then food is put on his highchair but not until. Then my daycare told me that they cheer with him and the other kids clap aloud to encourage him along. At lunch time there he opens his mouth willfully and happily until all of his medicine is gone. Smiling and clapping along it almost becomes a game. Hope you find something to work you. Guest guest
:-) Patti will actually take the capsules back out of her mouth and hand them to me while saying " No, no, no. " Sometimes we fight about it when she does this but still wants to eat some fatty food. She is a stinker. Eventually, I just put the plate in eye shot, but out of reach and if she really is hungry she will pick them up and take them on her own. She does the same thing with cpt. She runs the tv while doing it. If I stop on a show she doesn't want to watch, then she wiggles and is hard to hold. If I stop on a show she likes she is very compliant and still.
