My usually very healthy dad went for his second cataract surgery today

and when they hooked him up to the heart monitors his heart was beating

too fast and out of rhythm. I don't know the name for this. Anyway,

they took him by ambulance to the ER and we were there from 10 this

morning until they finally got him into a regualar room at 6:30 this

evening. The meds brought the fast pulse down, but it is still out of

rhythm. They are going to shock his heart (don't know the name for

that either) tomorrow. He is a smoker and they said if he didn't give

it up, he would die soon. I'm used to dealing with my husband's

illnesses, but my daddy (yes, still my daddy even though I'm 30 years

old) is different. I'm scared. I knew you all have always been there

for me during all of 's problems and I thought I would turn to you

again to help me with this crisis.

,

I'm 43 and my father is still " Daddy " . For some of us, that never

changes. I know what you mean, though. About three years ago, my

father was complaining of chest pains to one of his coworkers, who

urged him to make an appointment right away. Thank God for that man,

because Daddy never said anything to anyone else, even my mom.

His doctor had him in for Angioplasty the following day. He had

three blockages, two of which required stents. He is healthier now,

as far as his heart, but he has to work on his diet and his weight.

He'll be 69 this year, and he needs to stop eating Pop-Tarts now! :-)

Take a deep breath and be glad they caught his condition in time to

do something about it. Support your dad whether or not he decides to

give up smoking. Some people would rather not quit, and you need to

prepare yourself for that, in case he's one of them.

You and your family are in my prayers. For myself, I always ask God

for strength, and I'll ask Him to help you with that, too.

Please let me know if there's anything else I can do,

The heart rhythm is probably atrial fibrillation and they sedate the patient and give a small shock called cardioversion.
