Guest guest
Hello and welcome to the group. I have the same questions as Natasha had. Where are you going for treatment, and what type of band is it? Did they do a scan or cast. At your daughter's age you def need to have her in an active band. You should still see good results at her age. We have many kids here that weren't banded till later. Sandy Willow's Mom Torticollis resolved Cranio Germany Grad > > Hi all! Guest guest
My son had his doc band from 14 to 18 months. We saw good correction although there is still some plagio. If you are having fit issues you need to go somewhere else quickly. At this age you don't have alot of time so you need to get her into a good fitting active band as soon as possible. We didn't start treatment until 8 months for our son because of the pediatrician not refering us sooner. At 8 months we had 2 bad fitting helmets. By the time that fiasco was over his head was worse shaped and we lost so much correciton time that we can't get back. Haylee mom to andre doc band grad > > Hi all! Guest guest
Hi Elaine, Welcome to the group. If you're getting a premade helmet, that means it's a passive helmet. Which means your baby is going to get minimal correction. Passive helmets rely totally on growth. The helmet sits on the baby's head and eventually the baby's head grows into the shape of the helmet, round. Once a baby hits 6 months old head growth slows down significantly! Your baby needs to be put into an active band, such as the DOCband, STARband or the Hangerband. Where are you located > > Hi all! Guest guest
- We're up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We went to Petoskey for the orthodics appointments. Why would they put her into something that's not going to work? The orthodist that's working with her seems to think we're going to see some correction...should I be throwing a fit rather then expecting results? Thanks for the info. -Elaine > > > > Hi all! Guest guest
Hi Elaine, Was your baby's head casted or scanned and then the helmet was made? If your baby has a helmet that's just off the shelf, it's a passive helmet. Do you know the type of band your baby will be getting? There are active bands and passive bands. Do you know which one your baby will be getting? > > > > > > Hi all! A friend sent the link to this group, thought I'd see > what > > > kind of experiences you've had. Guest guest
She's in a Danmar and has been for about 3 weeks. I appreciate your input but at this point I'm not changing the helmet. We are so far along and she's not getting any younger- so to speak. I guess at this point I have to rely on the expertise of my pediatrician and orthodist. I'll remain dilligent about making sure fit isn't an issue and continue making sure we hit the magic 23 hours each day. -Elaine > > > > > > > > Hi all! Guest guest
Not all orthos know there are more active options. The closest CT location to you is Chicago. however, there are probably some Hanger and STARband providers a little bit closer. Michigan Starband* Marquette General Hospital, 420 W. Guest guest
Okay, I looked at the star band and I'm not seeing a big difference in function between the star band and the danmar. What am I missing? Ours is a bi-valve. It's adjustable and kept tight (I'm hoping I'm explaining that the right way). > > > > > > > > Hi all! Guest guest
Hi, The difference is active bands are adjusted weekly or bi weekly. The inside of the band is shaved away. Whether or not a band is active or passive has nothing to do with it having a bi-valve. > > > > > > > > > > Hi all! He is one of triplets and the way he was positioned in utero, I am sure had something to do with the positioning. I have tried Repo and it did not work. Keep us posted and good look. Guest guest
Orthotists are doing things they shouldn't do every day. Ours had our son in a band that left red marks all over his head to the point that one spot was bleeding. He and the plastic surgeon wanted us to continue using the band. When we stopped using it he was 10 months old and his head had become a more assymetrical shape than it was in the first place. When he was 14 months old we managed to get a properly fitting band from another facility. He received great correction from it. If all they can offer is a passive band they may think they are doing you a favour. At the age of one you would probably get better results from all your time and effort from an active band. Guest guest
okay, I've heard what you all have had to say. Thanks for those who have answered my questions. We are continuing with the approach that we have begun and will be happy with the results. I wish we had started earlier but we didn't. I wish we were made of money so that I could hop on down to Chicago and get her in some fancy band- but we're not. We're a military family and our insurance doesn't cover any of this. We're doing the very best that we can. Thanks for the input and I wish you all luck. stripes6060 <taime@...> wrote: Hi,The difference is active bands are adjusted weekly or bi weekly. Guest guest
Hi. Sorry I haven't responded to you. Just read your last message about being a military family and insurance not covering. We are a Air Force family and tricare would not cover my twins either. I went to the state but was turned down too. Not sure which branch your family is in but the Air Force has Air Force Aid which wrote us a grant check to cover our twins helmets. Please email me at sunshinyday01@... if you want more information. I am pretty sure all military branchs have some type of Aid you can go to. I know for sure the Army does, not sure what they call it. Also talk to your chain of command someone should know how to help. VA is usless tried them. But American Legion and VFW may be able to help too. Please get back to me if you want more info. Again sorry I did not get back to you sooner about all of this. I wish you much luck with your daughter. Oh ya my twin sons got there starbands at 1 year and have made progress. Good luck and I wish you well. Sunshine mother of and Vedder Conyer, 1 year old, Starbands Beale AFB, CA Proud Security Forces Wife > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi all! Guest guest
Hi Elaine, My daughter has been wearing a doc-band since she was 11 months old. She had torticollis since birth and developed plagio. It took me a long time to finally get the help she needed. I just wanted to let you know she's wearing a second band and is now close to 16 months old. With older babies sometimes it takes longer to see correction. I hope your baby grows much faster than mine. That is a big issue when they get closer to the age of one. Good luck. Zofia > > Hi all! Guest guest
Hello Elaine Do you have Tricare Prime? I know they do not cover. We were one of the fortunate families that did get it approved due to a glitch in the system so I've learned later on. We were stationed in Germany when we had my daughter banded. What branch is your husband? There is always a money pool somewhere so I was told in Germany by her ped which is a LtCol at that time. He said that you can go through the unit, or the Meddac where you are to find out how to apply for this money. I would def go around and see if you can do that. Atleast maybe get covered what you guys started anyway. Have you seen any correction yet? I hope the band works for you. Where are you stationed? I'm sorry if I missed all this, but I just started posting again. ) Sandy Willow's Mom (6-2-2003) (We are stationed at Ft ) Torticollis resolved (02-2004) Cranio Germany Grad (02-2004) www.geocities.com/samipa74/Willow_Lanette.html www.palmerfamily.armedforcesfamilies.com www.drmy.net/spalmer > > > > > > > > > > > > Hi all! Guest guest
Hi Elaine, My son was banded at about 1 year with a local helmet, which is not one of the "official" active helmets and we saw a decent, in my opinion correction in 10 weeks that he has worn it. The helmet that we used had a slot on its side which had to be readjusted a few times per day. I must admit though that although my son's head did round out, the helmet that we used didn't really correct the forehead bossing. We are goign for a consult to CT on Monday to hear their opinion on Mark's head. We just need to now that we exausted all reasonable options before we call it quits. Good Luck!!! Theinside of the band is shaved away. Whether or not a band is active or passive has nothing to do with ithaving a bi-valve. > > > > >> > > > > Hi all!
