National Institutes of Health Seeks Candidates for Autologous Stem Cell Transplant Study

Patients between 15 and 40 years of age with severe SLE affecting major organ that is resistant to standard treatment may be eligible for this study.

If you have severe systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) the National Institutes of Health invites you to participate in a research study of autologous stem cell transplantation. Call 1- (TTY:1-) for more information.

The main purpose of this study is to determine whether long-term remission of your lupus can be achieved by using high doses of drugs to completely shut off your immune system. The drugs and treatments that the physicians at the NIH Clinical Center will use in this study have all been approved by the FDA for use in other diseases. They will then give you back your own blood stem cells that can rebuild a "new" more normal immune system.

NIH physicians hope that this treatment will make your lupus disappear for years without further treatment. Since 1996 nearly 100 patients with lupus have been treated worldwide with autologous stem cell transplantation.

All study related tests and medications are provided free of charge. After the first screening visit transportation and lodging assistance may be available. The study is conducted at the NIH in Bethesda, land. The NIH is part of the Department of Health and Human Services. Call today 1- (TTY 1-).
