We use cotton pads (I guess that is what you would call them) they are round

cotton disks that are flat and they work very well for us.

Subject: wears diapers/trouble checking ketones

Hi all,

Can anyone offer a suggestion for a better way to " catch " enough

urine in a diaper to check ketones? I have been using cotton balls

in Adrielle's diapers, as suggested by various sources, but I am not

having any luck.

I use 3 cotton balls as opposed to just one, but without fail the

diaper will be wet and the cotton balls not, or they will be wet but

not wet enough. Does anyone use anything else that works better??

I haven't been able to check levels for a few days now and I'm

getting a bit nervous!

When was in hospital we had the same prob - we knew there should be a

sample somewhere... but never seemed to find enough on the cotton balls to test.

We switched to using pieces of gauze for greater coverage area, and when we

had the situation where we knew there was some on there, but not enough to test,

a nurse showed us a good trick...put the gauze (this worked with cotton balls

too) into a syringe and push the plunger down as hard (held over a container) as

you can. You'd be surprised what comes out this way, we always managed to get

enough trickling out out to dip a ketone stick into.

Hi, we use cotton balls and sometimes I have misses, but it does work

for us. Have you tried gauze?

I noticed with Hannah that when I used a larger diaper I couldn't " catch " the

urine on the cottonball. Going down a diaper size did the trick. I also noticed

pamper diapers hold the cottonball in place better than huggies or loves. Don't

ask me why, I guess our kids will always be more expensive!
