Guest guest
I cannot handle the soy / soy products either. I use to be intolerant to anything dairy, but am now able to handle cream and some cheese and some ice-cream. Cream is suppose to be easier to digest than a glass of milk -- I don't know, but I do know it is okay for me. I use rice milk for my rice crispies and my cream of brown rice cereal. I believe what helps our digestive systems to re-boot is taking the probiotic acidophilus, as it replaces the good bacteria that have been destroyed in our colons. What do you think? Went back today to speak with him, and its good news, but bad news, but good news sort of thing. The first good news was that my iron is coming up slowly but surely, and this is good. Bad news, my pancreatic enzymes are all wacked out, so that in turn wacks out everything else. So, he is taking me off lactose for a month, just to see if maybe that is slowing my healing process. Soooo, went out and got the "Hylä" icecream, yogurt, milk and cheese he suggested. (Hylä is what they call lactose free here) Fed the remainder of my wonderful lactose free ice cream to the dog (and shed a small tear). Sigh.... The good news is, I tried the milk, and cheese and they are both indistinguishable from the stuff with lactose! Also, Ive had the yogurt and ice cream before, and they are very good. So, Im hoping for the best. One more small problem however. I cant tolerate soy well, so when we return to the US in October, Im not sure what I can do about the milk situation should he want me to stay off of it. Have any of you who are lactose intolerant tried the "Lactaid" milk? Any other suggestions? My modem blew up last week, so Im busy playing catch up, so if this has recently been discussed, I apologise, but wanted to toss this out for discussion. Thanks in advance!CassiGluten free in downtown Imatra! In his opinion, the Lactaid brand milk tastes better than any other brand. I find it slightly sweet, but completely acceptable for drinking or cooking with. The reduced lactose ice cream in America - avoid! Maureen

Guest guest
One of my kids and I use only lactaid milk for our lactose problems and it works great. My son is a cereal-aholic (even before going GF) and he nearly cried when we had to take him off lactose. He also has regular ice cream now and again if he takes a lactaid pill with it (but I'm not certain how great it works, he's gone from ice cream every night...if I'd let him...to maybe once a week. I'm thinking it does bother him so he picks a day for it and indulges.) He's becoming less intolerant though, now he can have a little butter and cheese without problems. Anyway, the milk works. Lol! > > Well, went to the vampire last week for the " token " blood work the Dr > wants to do monthly to monitor my CD. Guest guest
Thanks for your replies. I do take probiotics, I take PB8 which is quite the assortment of happy bacteria, and take 20billion CFU of that daily. Guess that is part of the reason he wants to explore the lactose thing. Im happy to hear the Lactaid milk is good. The hylä milk here is slightly sweet as well, but not so much that its disturbing to me. It just reminds me more of regular whole milk (I normally drink skim) taste wise. I have forgotten who had asked about the lactose free cream cheese frosting, but was wondering if anyone found an acceptable one. I had said, I tried the Philly and the Sam's brands in the US, and found them sorta rubbery for a spread or dip. Im so totally addicted to my smoked fish and cream cheese on the Wasa GF hardtack for snacks.... I just cant live without it! Thanks too for the heads up on the icecream! Guess I will be sticking to juice bars! LOL! Best! Cassi (still catching up, ugh!) Gluten free in downtown Imatra!
Guest guest
Hi , yes still here. Just playing catch up after 4 days holiday in Lapland and coming home to an exploded modem that took forever to replace! Now, since I know about the milk.... What about the lactose free yogurt? anyone try it? I can make my own if need be, but I always seem to forget to keep a starter... sigh. Has anyone tried using home made yogurt and fruit for frozen yogurt? Guess these are things I should be trying out here, but Ive been up to my can in canning, freezing and making wine and juice. OH HOW I LOVE fresh strawberry season!!!! Next will come the raspberrys, then the gooseberrys, lingonberrys, currants. Plums will follow shortly, then finally about mid sept will come the apples. Now, off to can up some more juice that I took off the stove a bit ago... Best! Cassi Gluten free in downtown Imatra!
