If you see this twice that is why....If anyone has an article they could post, or know of an article that I could get my hands on please let me know. My son't pain Dr's say if I can show them that it might work for Nick they will fund a unit for us. His pain meds are not helping him right now and so we are hopeful that we can get some releif from this device. So if you can help us please let me know. Thanks allot guys...Deb >> Dear Deb, A TENS unit is a one-time expense and is one HELLUVA lot cheaper than ongoing narcotics bills, especially when the narcotics don't seem to be working effectively. I use my unit in CONJUNCTION with medications, and while it is certainly not a cure-all, for me at least, it has brought relief. A positive side effect is that it helps loosen and soothe tight muscles which, by itself, might not sound like a tremendous deal, but think about this. Most of us, as a means of self-protection, change our posture unwittingly when we develop CP. We try to physically " cover " our abdomen with as much of our torso as we can, which leads to slouching of the shoulders down and around and as close to the area of pain as possible; our neck, too, becomes pulled forward, our chest down, etc... Most of us don't even realize that this is a problem with CP and abdominal pain. What happens is that many of those muscles begin to atrophy and shrink, we begin to suffer more frequent and more severe headaches, etc... the problems compound. With a TENS unit, we not only pull pain away from our pancreas and find relief that way, but we can also use it to exercise, stimulate and encourage the regrowth of those muscles that overtime have become diminished. We can improve our posture increasingly, rather than continuing down the path of atrophy and continued poor muscular health, etc... So the benefits are truly multidimensional and there are really an unlimited number of ways that we can benefit from this type of unit other than just the more obvious ways that the unit is marketed. Please keep these things in mind. I'll also pull a couple of links for you to follow, you might find some interesting and helpful info for your DR's there. Consider cutting and pasting or just printing out that which you find helpful to you and presenting it to your DR's. I can't imagine that they wouldn't want to fund the acquisition of this unit, it has so many incredibly beneficial uses, and the costs are relatively next to nothing for a single unit. It's quite amazing. I hope this is of some help Deb, good luck and God bless. Peace, Terry in KC What is T.E.N.S.? Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (T.E.N.S.) has been used successfully for many years in the symptomatic relief and management of chronic, intractable pain, and as an adjunctive treatment in the management of post surgical and post-traumatic pain conditions. T.E.N.S. relieves pain by sending small, electrical impulses through electrodes placed on the skin to underlying nerve fibers. These fibers carry sensations such as touch, warmth, pressure and pain. T.E.N.S. can replace pain impressions from these fibers with a massage like sensation. Traditionally, drugs have been the primary means of controlling pain because they are simple, effective, and in most cases, safe. However, there are many patients who are less tolerant of drugs and they may experience potentially harmful side effects, such as constipation, dizziness, nausea or depressed respiration; and there may also be the risk of addiction. T.E.N.S. is a safe, non invasive, drug-free medically proven method of pain management. T.E.N.S. may relieve pain from the following conditions: back pain, muscle tension or pain, fibromylagia, arthritis, carpal tunnel, RSI. http://www.naphosting.co.uk/psn/Alt.htm http://www.isokineticsinc.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=iso kinetics&Product_Code=cg_77600 http://infoventures.com/emf/currlit/bu13824.html http://www.nopaintoday.com/tens.htm http://www.vitalityweb.com/backstore/TENSpain.htm http://shop.store.yahoo.com/backstore/tenpainconun.html

Guest guest
Deb There are companies that deal only with TENS units. I do not know where you are from or what medical supply companies are located in your town. If you can call a TENS unit company ( most medical supply stores can give you the names of them ). Ask to speak with a representative. They have some reps that travel around and push their products on PT's and docs. Ask the Tens company or the rep to get you some research data on the benefits of the Tens unit and if they have used it on abdominal pain. Most reps will go out of their way to find it for you so that you can try their product. Some companies will give you a 30 day trial and not charge your insurance company. Another place to call is a hospital PT department or a private PT vendor. They keep Tens units in stock for use with a physicians prescription. Ask them if they have any literature for you. Also the PT's know where to hook up the electrodes to give you the most amont of pain relief. Sometimes it is a trial by error and you just have to move them around. Also I think if you check Mark's web site he may have articles on the Tens. My sister is a PT and I am an RN and we have both used TENS units on our patients. Usually you know within 24-72 hours if it will help but sometimes you have to move the electrodes around. Your doc probably wants to make sure that the TENS will not HURT or damage the pancreas area in any way before he will try it. That is why I recommend calling a TENS supplier as they are more apt to go out of their way to show the doc that it may help. I hope that this info was of some benefit.
